Suggested answers: It seems to me that both pictures show superstitions that bring bad luck to people. Perhaps, a black colour looks like mourning and that is why people try to avoid it, as they’re afraid of death. If I saw a black cat in the cemetery, of course I would be frightened. 34 SSwork in pairs. They interview their partner about different superstitions in the world. Suggested dialogue: - What would you do if you broke a mirror? - I would be very unhappy for some time and then I’d buy a new one. - What would you do if you had the chance to change your fate? - I would choose to live in 19th century because I would have better relations with the people, more slowly tempo of life etc. - What would you do if you had to pass your exam on the 13th Friday? - I would do nothing as I cannot change this situation for the better, I’d pass my exam and I’d hope for the best. - What would you do if you found smb’s talisman? - I would return it to the owner. - What would you do if a black cat crossed your road? - I would find other road. In pairs, SS compare the questions they chose and say whether they believe the answers or not. Feed back to find out what information SS found interesting or are skeptical about. 35 SS discuss with each other different superstitions in the modern society and possible changes in them. Suggested dialogue: - Do people believe in different superstitions in the world? - Yes, they do, as there are a lot of horoscopes in the newspapers and on the radio, books devoted to different superstitions and so on. - Have the superstitions been changed in the modern world? - it’s difficult for me to judge. 36 SS discuss with each other about importance of knowing different superstitions for visitors. Suggested dialogue: - What is the most superstitious country in the world? - If I am not mistaken it is England. - Is it important for visitors to know about different superstitions in the country they arrive? - I don’t think so. That depends on the situation and the country. 37 Ask SS to divide into two groups so that there is an equal number of SS in each one. Explain that they should dramatize debates devoted to the problem of superstitions. Give SS three minutes to think over the arguments of their position. Ask SS to try to make their ideas convincing. While the debates, don’t correct any speech mistakes that SS do: write them down to correct afterwards.
