Ex.1. Answer the questions.

Presenting a Company

Unit 8

Elton is a Russian joint stock company (JSC) specializing in the development and manufacturing of asymmetric electro-chemical capacitors. Elton is one of the world leaders in this field. Its products are used not only in Russia, but in some western European countries and the United States.

Elton’s main milestones are the following:

1993 The company was established and a pilot production of electrochemical capacitors started.

1995 The manufacturing and marketing of Elton’s products in Russia

began.

1998 The capacitors penetrated into the North American market. Capacitors were tested by several US companies.

1999 Elton started to supply capacitors for trucks and passenger vehicles to the USA.

2000 Kold Ban International (KBI), the company’s official distributor in the USA, started sales of Elton products under the KAPower trademark.

2004 -2008 Elton was fully engaged into the development and manufacturing of electrochemical capacitors both in Russia and the USA.

2009 Elton granted a license to SAFT Company for the manufacturing and marketing of the capacitors in the countries of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Elton, JSC, has conducted a number of tests of the locomotive’s diesel engine starting capacitor system. Three diesel locomotives equipped with a diesel engine capacitor starting system have been tested for five months at the Insk station (Novosibirsk) of the West Siberian railway. In the engine driver’s cabin a control console was set up to monitor the voltage of the standard battery and capacitor modules. The results of the tests demonstrated that the annual saving was of about 420 million rubles. This fact has excited great interest of the railway men to the product developed by Elton. The economic effect from the introduction of the starting capacitor system during the entire service life of the diesel locomotive shall be over 1.7 million rubles. Taking into account the fact that the Russian railways have a fleet of about 6,000 shunting diesel locomotives, the annual economic effect can come to over 420 million rubles.

1. What field does Elton specialize in?

2. When was the company established and the production launched?

3. When did the company start production abroad?

4. What kind of grant did Elton license?

5. Tell about the test conducted by Elton at the West Siberian railway.

6. Why did the test arise a great interest?

7. What can the annual saving be (according to the test results)?

To make a good presentation it is very important to prepare well. Preparation takes a lot of time, but it is really worth doing, it is the key to a successful presentation. First, think of the length of your speech and leave some time for questions. Check out the facilities you need: the room, computers, microphones, video equipment. Make sure everything is available and works well. Consider the audience: number of people, their age, nationality and culture. Find out whether they know the topic or it is completely new for them. Mind the content of your presentation: the purpose of your talk, the main idea, and what kind of feedback you expect.

When you prepare visuals always check the following: 1. How many visuals will I have?; 2. Are they clear to understand?; 3. Will the audience be able to read them (size and colours)?; 4. Do they have effective headlines?; 5. Is there as little text as possible?; 6. Are they really relevant or could be omitted?

The rules mentioned above will also help you to deal with nervousness while speaking to the audience. You should also practise your talk at home until you feel at ease with the text. Doing some breathing exercises before your talk will help you to reduce nervousness. During the presentation keep your back straight, breathe deeply and articulate clearly. It is good if you are able to keep eye contact with your audience. It will be easier to do this if you greet the people as they arrive and get acquainted with them before the presentation.

Your presentation should be well structured. Many experienced presenters suggest WISE approach to start with. WISE means: Welcome your audience, Introduce yourself (name, position, function), Say what the topic is (main idea and objectives), Explain why the audience will be interested (expected feedback).

Then you can move to the Main Part. Your Main Part should consist of three main points with details illustrated by visuals. Do not forget to highlight the key issues and summarize the main ideas.

Conclusion should also contain several steps. First signal the end of your talk. Then summarize the important points, explain their significance. Make your final statement and invite questions. When dealing with questions listen carefully and make sure you have understood the question. If you don’t know the answer, say so and offer to find out later. Check that the questioner is satisfied with your answer.

Please, use the recommendations given in practice and they will help you to give a good performance.
