THE OUTLAW

PUSS IN BOOTS 1

Puss is an outlaw. His dream is go back to his home in the town of San Ricardo.

Humpty Dumpty is an egg. He was Puss’s friend when they were young.

Kitty Softpaws. Kitty works with Humpty.

Imelda works at the San Ricardo orphanage. It is a home for children with no mother or father.

Jack and Jill have the magic beans. A beanstalk comes up from the magic beans.

The Golden Goose has golden eggs.

The Comandante and his men – the town watch.

CHAPTER ONE - MAGIC BEANS

It was a dark night. A cat stopped at the door of a restaurant. There were a lot of men there. He cat walked in. The men started to laugh.

‘Look!’ said one man. ‘It’s a cat.’

‘I am Puss In Boots,’ said the cat.

The men were quiet.

‘I’m hungry. Can you help me?’ said Puss.

‘Jack and Jill are in town,’ said a man. ‘And they have the magic beans. Go up the beanstalk and you can find the golden eggs!’

‘There are no magic beans,’ said Puss.

‘Yes, they are,’ said the man. ‘I saw them. But no one can steal from Jack and Jill.’

‘I can!’ said Puss.

Puss In Boots looked in Jack and Jill’s room. Jack had the magic beans in his hand.

‘Wow!’ Puss said. ‘I want those beans in his hand.’

Suddenly a black cat jumped into the room.

‘Stop!’ Puss said.

Then Jack and Jill saw the cats.

‘Go away!’ they shouted.

The black cat jumped out of the room and Puss ran after her. The black cat ran to a big room. Puss looked around. There were a lot of cats.

‘Those beans were mine,’ said Puss. ‘Fight me!’

‘Don’t fight!’ said cats. ‘Dance!’

‘I can dance!’ said Puss.

When they stopped, Puss saw the black cat’s face. She was beautiful.

‘Who are you?’ asked Puss.

‘I’m Kitty Softpaws,’ she said. Then she ran away.

Puss went after Kitty, but there was someone with her.

‘It’s good to see you, friend!’ he said.

‘Humpty Dumpty!’ said Puss. He was angry.

‘Listen,’ said Humpty. ‘You, me and Kitty can steal those magic beans! Thеn we can find the Golden Goose with her golden eggs. We’re outlaws now, but soon we can be rich!’

‘Not this time!’ said Puss. He walked away.

Kitty went after Puss.

‘Why are you angry?’ she asked.

Puss looked at her.

‘It’s a long story…’ he said.

CHAPTER TWO - THE ORPHANAGE

‘My home was in San Ricardo,’ Puss said to Kitty.

‘It was a hot day when I first went there. I was young, hungry and I had no mother.’

Imelda was at the door of the orphanage.

‘Come in!’ she said.

Humpty was at the orphanage too. The boys and girls laughed at Humpty.

‘Hey, Egg boy,’ Little Boy Blue shouted. ‘What’s for breakfast?’

But I liked Humpty. He had a lot of dreams. Humpty had a dream to find the magic beans.

‘First you find the magic beans. Then you can go up the magic beanstalk,’ he said.

‘And who lives at the top, Puss, do you know?’

‘No, I don’t!’ I said. I loved his stories.

‘The Golden Goose!’ said Humpty. ‘We’re going to steal her golden eggs. We’re going to be rich. And then we can go far away from here!’

We looked everywhere for the magic beans. We stole beans from shops and gardens. We had red beans, big beans, coffee beans …but no magic beans.

Soon the magic beans were the dream of children …and we started to steal more things. Imelda was not happy with us.

‘Why are you doing this?’ she said. ‘You are good boys.’

One day we were in the town when a bull ran down the road. The Comandante’s mother was in front of the bull. I jumped onto the bull and stopped it.

‘Thank you, Puss!’ said the Comandante.

Imelda had some boots for boots for me.

‘Now you are Puss In Boots,’ she said.

It was a great day for me.

CHAPTER THREE - SAN RICARDO BANK

Everyone in San Ricardo loved me now. I didn’t steal things now, but Humpty didn’t stop. One night Humpty came into my room.

‘Quick!’ said Humpty. ‘Little Boy Blue is coming after me. Let’s go!’

‘Where?’ I asked.

Humpty did not answer. We went to a dark place in town.

‘Wait for me here,’ Humpty shouted.

Of course, I waited for him. He was my friend. When he came back he had bags of gold with him. It was all the gold from San Ricardo bank!

‘Thanks, Puss!’ said Humpty. ‘We’ve got the gold!’

‘No, Humpty!’ I shouted. ‘Why did you do this to me?’

Then the Comandante and his men came.

‘Listen Comandante’ I said. ‘It was a trick!’

‘Take them to prison!’ shouted the Comandante.

‘No!’ said Humpty. ‘Let’s go!’

We went quickly. Imelda watched from the orphanage door.

‘Puss!’ she shouted. I looked at her, I did not look at the road.

‘Watch out!’ shouted Humpty. ‘The bridge!’

CRASH! Humpty and I fell and the gold fell off the bridge into the water.

‘I ran away,’ Puss said to Kitty. ‘From that day, I was an outlaw.’

‘And I went to prison!’ said Humpty. ‘But that was a long time ago. Can we be the friends again?’

‘I want to give the gold back to San Ricardo,’ said Puss.

‘Come with us,’ said Humpty, ‘and you can give the golden eggs to San Ricardo! What do you think, Puss?’

‘OK, but no tricks this time,’ said Puss. ‘This is for everyone in San Ricardo, not for you. We are not friends.’

Puss’s dream was to go back home to San Ricardo.

‘Can Humpty and Kitty help me?’ he thought. ‘Or am I always going to be Puss In Boots, the outlaw?’

The town of Dirt is in the Mojave Desert. The animals in Dirt don’t have very much water.

Rango is a green chameleon.

Roadkill is an armadillo. He lives in the desert.

The Mayor is a tortoise. The animals of Dirt go to the Mayor for help. But is he good or bad?

Bad Bill is a lizard. He works for the Mayor. He does not like new animals in his town.

Beans is a lizard. She has some land but no water. But why does the Mayor want to buy her land?

Everyone is frightened of Rattlesnake Jake.

CHAPTER ONE - THE CHAMELEON

It was very hot in the Mojave Desert. A chameleon walked in the hot sun. Who was he? Where was he from?

‘Hello, friend!’ someone said. It was Roadkill, the armadillo.

‘Where can I find water?’ asked the chameleon.

‘In the town,’ Roadkill said. ‘It’s one day’s walk from here.’

Next day, the chameleon came to the town of Dirt. He was hot, tired and thirsty.

He walked into the bar. They stopped talking and looked at him.

‘Give me some water!’ The chameleon said.

Everyone laughed.

‘There’s no water in this town,’ someone said.

‘Who are you?’

The chameleon started thinking…. quickly

‘I’m…. Rango,’ he said.

‘Did you kill the Jenkins brothers?’ someone asked.

‘Yes, that was me!’ said Rango.

‘Did you kill all seven brothers?’

‘Of course!’ he said. And he started the story.

Rango loved a good story. And he started the story. And the animals in the bar loved a hero. But not everyone liked Rango’s story.

‘You killed the Jenkins brothers,’ Bad Bill bar said, ‘But what about me?’

Rango and Bad Bill walked out of the bar into the sun.

‘What am I going to do?’ thought Rango.

Suddenly, Rango saw a very big bird. Bad Bill ran. Rango ran too, but the bird went after him.

‘Help’ shouted Rango, and ran into the old water tower.

The water tower fell onto the bird. The animals were very happy. Now Rango was a hero!

CHAPTER TWO - THE MAYOR

The Mayor was with a girl lizard. Her name was Beans.

‘Listen, Beans,’ said the Mayor. ‘Your land is not good. You don’t have any water. I can buy your land from you.’

‘NO!’ said Beans.

Then the Mayor saw Rango. He wanted to talk to him.

‘Ah, Mr. Rango,’ he said. ‘When you have water, you have everything.’

The Mayor had some water on his table, but he did not give any water to Rango.

‘You are a hero,’ the Mayor said. ‘Please be Sheriff of our town!’

The new Sheriff of Dirt! Rango was very happy.

The animals of Dirt waited at the water pipe. They waited for water. But out of the pipe came…. mud.

‘What are we going to do?’ shouted the animals.

‘We’re going to look for water,’ said Rango.

‘Who’s coming?’

‘Me,’ said Beans. ‘Where are we going?’

Rango did not know.

‘Let’s find the end of the water pipe,’ said an old bird.

‘Yes!’ shouted Rango. ‘We’re going to the end of the water pipe!’

The Mayor watched. ‘It’s time for Rattlesnake Jake!’ he said to Bad Bill.

Rango and the animals went to the end of the pipe. They found some mud.

‘I don’t understand it!’ said Rango. ‘We don’t have water… but we have mud.’

‘Everyone’s thirsty,’ said Beans, ‘but the Mayor has water. I don’t understand that!’

‘I’m going to talk to the Mayor,’ Rango said.

CHAPTER THREE - RATTLESNAKE JAKE

Rango and the animals came back to town. Suddenly everyone ran away.

‘HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSS’

Rango saw a very big snake with red eyes. It was Rattlesnake Jake. Rango was very frightened.

‘You’re not a hero, Sheriff, said Rattlesnake Jake. ‘Did you kill the Jenkins brothers … all seven of them?’

‘No, I didn’t,’ said Rango quietly.

‘Go away from this town,’ shouted Rattlesnake Jake, ‘and never come back!’

Rango had no answer this time. He walked away slowly. Rattlesnake Jake laughed. He went to see the Mayor. The Mayor had some pictures of a new city in front of him. Beans was there too.

‘You can’t have my land!’ Beans shouted.

Rattlesnake Jake hissed, ‘Give your land to the Mayor.’

Rango was sad. He walked and walked.

‘Hello, friend!’ someone said. It was Roadkill.

‘Come and see this.’

Rango looked. It was the big city of Las Vegas. Rango thought about the Mayor … and Beans’ land… Suddenly Rango started to look for something. Soon he found it – a big water pipe.

‘Look!’ he shouted. ‘Someone closed the pipe. Now I understand! The Mayor wants to have a new city on the land. He doesn’t want the town of Dirt.’

CHAPTER FOUR - THE HERO

Beans looked into Rattlesnake Jake’s red eyes. She was very frightened. Suddenly, there was a shout.

‘Rattlesnake Jake, come out here!’

It was Rango.

‘This is going to be interesting!’ said Jake.

He went out. Beans and the Mayor went with him. Rango was next to the water pipe.

‘Are you thirsty?’ asked Rango.

Back in the desert, Roadkill shouted, ‘Now!’

Suddenly, a lot of water came out of the pipe and fell on Jake. The Mayor looked at the water and started thinking …quickly.

‘Rango,’ he said. ‘You and me…Let’s be friends! And Rattlesnake Jake? He’s nothing.’

But Jake was behind the Mayor.

‘Good work, Rango,’ Jake said. Then he looked at the Mayor. ‘And you are coming with me. HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!’

And no one in the town saw the Mayor again.

The animals were very happy. They jumped up and down in the beautiful water. Beans looked into Rango’s eyes.

‘Thank you,’ he said. ‘You are a hero!’

Blu and Linda live in a small town in the USA. They are good friends. Blu is a blue Spix’s Macaw. He can’t fly.

Jewel is a beautiful blue Spix’s Macaw. She lives in Rio in Brazil.

Tulio lives in Rio. He helps birds from the rainforest. He loves Spix’s Macaws.

Rafael lives in the forest.

Luiz is a good friend of Rafael.

Marcel wants to be rich. Nigel works for Marcel. They are friends. They are not nice.

Rio is in Brazil is next to the rainforest. In Rio in February or March, it is Carnival. There is a parade and everyone dances.

A LONG TIME AGO…

It was morning in the rainforest of Rio. A young blue Spix’s Macaw watched the birds in the sky.

‘I want to fly too,’ he thought.

But he was young and his wings were not strong.

Suddenly, the birds flew away. The were some men in the rainforest. The young macaw was frightened. He fell down and down.

‘One more!’ shouted a man and put the macaw in a cage.

The men put a lot of cages on a plane. The plane flew away…far from the rainforest of Rio.

In a small town in the USA, a young girl saw the blue macaw for the first time.

‘I’m Linda,’ said the girl. ‘You can come home with me.’

CHAPTER ONE - TWO SPIX’S MACAWS

Blu loved living with Linda. She had a bookshop now and Blu stayed with her all day.

‘Come on, Blu,’ said Linda after breakfast.

‘We don’t want to be late.’

The shop was always quiet, but today a man came in.

‘I’m Tulio,’ said the man. ‘I’m from Rio. I saw your pictures of Blu on the internet. There aren’t many Spix’s Macaws in the rainforest now. Did you know that?’

‘No,’ said Linda sadly. ‘We didn’t.’

‘But WE can do something,’ said Tulio. ‘I have a Blu Spix’s Macaw too. Her name is Jewel. Come to Rio and help the Spix’s Macaw!’

Rio was very far away but Linda wanted to help the blue Spix’s Macaw too.

‘Come on, Blu!’ said Linda. ‘Let’s go to Rio!’

CHAPTER TWO - RIO!

In Rio it was hot and sunny. Linda and Blu were in Tulio’s car. There were a lot of people. Some of the people danced.

‘It’s OK, Linda,’ laughed Tulio. ‘It’s a start of Carnival.’

Tulio opened the door to a big room.

‘Come on, Blu!’ he said. ‘This is Jewel.’

‘Wow,’ thought Blu. ‘She is beautiful!’

‘Hi,’ he said. ‘I’m Blu.’

But Jewel did not want to talk.

That night, Blu waited for Linda by the door.

‘Soon I can go home,’ he thought.

Suddenly the door opened. Blu was frightened.

‘Jewel!’ shouted Blu. ‘Are you OK?’

Jewel did not answer. Then someone put them in a cage. A man and a white bird looked into the cage.

‘Two Spix’s Macaws,’ said the man. He put a chain on their legs. ‘We’re going to be rich, Nigel.’

‘Very good, Marcel!’ laughed the white bird.

Nigel and Marcel went out. There were a lot of birds in the room.

‘What are we going to do now?’ said Jewel.

‘I know,’ said Blu. He opened the cage. ‘I have a cage like this at home.’

‘Great,’ said Jewel. ‘Let’s fly!’

Jewel flew out of the cage. She pulled Blu behind her on the chain.

‘No!’ shouted Blu. ‘I can’t fly!’

They fell down and down.

That night, Linda and Tulio looked for Blu and Jewel. Nigel and Marcel looked too. They didn’t find them.

CHAPTER THREE - ‘YOU CAN FLY TOO, BLU!’

Blu and Jewel walked and walked. They came to the rainforest. A bird flew down to them.

‘Hello!’ he said. ‘I’m Rafael.’

‘Can you help us with this chain?’ asked Blu.

‘No, but my friend, Luiz, can help,’ said Rafael.

‘Let’s go and see him.’

‘There’s a problem,’ said Jewel. ‘Blu can’t fly.’

‘Come with me!’ said Rafael.

They walked to the top of the rainforest. In the sky there was a hang-glider.

‘That’s not a bird and it can fly,’ said Rafael. ‘You can fly too, Blu.’

Rio looked very far away. Blu was frightened.

‘Now!’ shouted Jewel. She jumped into the sky.

‘No!’ shouted Blu. ‘I can’t do it!’

‘Oh no!’ said Jewel. ‘Not again!’

They fell down and down and then…

‘Where are we?’ asked Blu.

‘Open your eyes and look!’ laughed Jewel.

Blu opened his eyes. They were on the hang-glider.

‘Wow!’ said Blu. ‘I’m flying! I love it!’

Rafael’s friend, Luiz, was a big dog. He helped Blu and Jewel.

‘Yes!’ shouted Jewel when the chain came off.

She flew into the sky. Blu looked up. He was sad. He wanted to fly with her.

Suddenly, Nigel was there.

‘You’re coming to Carnival with me!’ he shouted to Jewel.

Blu ran after them. In the parade he saw Marcel. He had Jewel in the cage.

‘Jewel, I’m here!’ shouted Blu.

‘You were quick,’ said a bird behind him. It was Nigel. ‘I’ve got a cage for you too.’

CHAPTER FOUR - LEARNING TO FLY

Linda and Tulio were at the parade. They saw Marcel too.

‘He’s got Blu and Jewel!’ shouted Linda. ‘Come on!’

A plane waited for Marcel and Nigel. They put the cages in the plane.

‘Let’s fly!’ shouted Marcel.

Linda and Tulio watched the plane fly away.

‘What do we do now?’ said Linda.

Blu quickly opened all the cages in the plane. He opened the plane door too, but then Nigel saw him.

‘No!’ shouted Jewel. She wanted to stop Nigel but he pulled her away.

‘Ow! My wing!’ she shouted. She fell out of the plane door. ‘Blu! Help! I can’t fly!’

‘I’m coming!’ shouted Blu.

He jumped out the plane and fell quickly to Jewel.

‘I’ve got you!’ he said. Then he opened his wings. ‘I can do it this time,’ he thought.

‘Look!’ shouted Linda. She and Tulio looked up at the sky.

‘It’s Blu,’ said Linda, ‘and he’s flying!’
