Another famous storyteller was Rudyard Kipling, whose novels include Captains Courageous and Kim. Wilkie Collins wrote what was the first widely admired mystery novel, The Moonstone. Towards the end of the era, two of the best-known characters in literature came into being when Arthur Conan Doyle invented his master detective Sherlock Holmes and Bram Stoker created Count Dracula.

The novels by Thomas Hardy, often regarded as naturalistic, are set in the lonely farm county of Wessex, and they slice pessimistically through manners and social customs to touch on the nature of life itself. His most famous novel is Tess of D’Urbervilles.
