I.The Use of the Indefinite Article

Articles with other Groups of Proper Names.

♦ Names of streets, parks and squares are generally used without any
article.

e.g. Oxford Street, Kingsway, Pall Mall, Whitehall, Piccadilly, Fleet Street,
Downing Street, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park, Central Park, etc.
There are a few exceptions: the Strand (in London), the High Street, the Main
Street (in the USA), the Snowdonia National Park, etc.

♦ Names of theaters museums, picture galleries, concert halls, cinemas,
clubs are used with the definite article.

e.g. The Coliseum Theater, the Opera House, The British Museum, the Louvre,
the Festival Hall, the Chaikovsky Hall, the Odeon, etc.

♦ Names of hotels are used with the definite article.

e.g. The Ambassador Hotel, the Continental Hotel, fheJSavoy, etc.

♦ Names of airports and railway stations are generally used without any
article.

e.g. London Airport, Kennedy Airport, Waterloo Station, Victoria Station, etc.

♦ Names of buildings, bridges take no article.

e.g. Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Westminster Bridge, Tower
Bridge.

BUT. The White House, The Tower.

♦ Names of ships and boats are used with the definite article.
e.g. The Sedov, the Titanic, the Queen Mary.

♦ Names of newspapers and magazines are generally used witii the definite
article.

e.g. The Times, the Daily World, the Daily Telegraph, the Economist, etc.

♦ Names of organizations and political parties are used with the definite
article.

e.g. The Liberal Рапу, the Conservative Party, the Church, the London City Council, the House of Commons.

BUT. Parliament (in Great Britain)
(the) Congress (in the USA)

♦ There is no article with names of universities and colleges.

e.g. Oxford University, Cambridge University, Harvard University, Hertford
College, Trinity College, etc.

USE OF ARTICLES WITH NOUNS IN SOME SET EXPRESSIONS

ADJECTIVES.

Adjectives are words expressing properties of objects: e.g. large, blue, simple; clever, production, etc. and, hence, qualifying nouns. Adjectives in English do not change for number or case. The only grammatical category they have is the degrees of comparison.
