Present Perfect Continuous

Time Expressions with Present Perfect

The Present Perfect versus the Past Simple

  • Always use the Present Perfect when the time is not important, or not specified or has not ended yet.

· Always use the Simple Past when details about the time or place are specified or asked for. You can use the Past Simple with specific time expressions such as: yesterday, one year ago, last week, when I was a child, when I lived in Japan, at that moment, that day, one day, etc.

· Always use the Present Perfect to ask or say how long something has been happening (up to the present)

· Always use the Past Simple to ask or say when (to ask where) something happened.

· Always use the Present Perfect to give new information or to announce a recent happening

· Always use the Past Simple to continue talking about it.

Compare:

Present perfect Simple past
I have lived in Lyon. I lived in Lyon in 1989.
They have eaten Thai food. How longhave you known her They ate Thai food last night. Whendid you see him?
Have you seen 'Othello'?. Where did you see 'Othello'?
We have been to Ireland. When did you go to Ireland?

There is also a difference of attitude that is often more important than the time factor.

"What did you do at school today?" is a question about activities, and considers the school day as finished.
"What have you done at school today?" is a question about results - "show me", and regards the time of speaking as a continuation of the school day.

When we use the Present Perfect it means that something has happened at some point in our lives before now. Remember, the exact time the action happened is not important.

Sometimes, we want to limit the time we are looking in for an experience. We can do this with expressions such as: this week, this month, so far, up to now, etc.

Examples:

  • Have you been to Mexico in the last year?
  • I have seen that movie six times in the last month.
  • They have had three tests in the last week.
  • She graduated from university less than three years ago. She has worked for three different companies so far.
  • My car has broken down three times this week.

"Last year" and "in the last year" are very different in meaning. "Last year" means the year before now, and it is considered a specific time which requires Simple Past. "In the last year" means from 365 days ago until now. It is not considered a specific time, so it requires Present Perfect.

Examples:

  • I went to Mexico last year.
I went to Mexico in the calendar year before this one.
  • I have been to Mexico in the last year.
I have been to Mexico at least once at some point between 365 days ago and now.

Time expressions used with the Present Perfect:

for, since, already, yet, always, just, ever, never, so far, today, this week/month/year, etc., how long, lately, recently, still, etc.
