1. Jack London (John Griffith) (1876-1916) was born in San Francisco into a very poor family. He had worked at factories; he had travelled across the ocean as a sailor; he had walked from San Francisco to New York with an army of jobless workers. After reading the "Communist Manifesto," Jack London becamean enthusiastic believer in socialism. During the sixteen years of his literary career, he published about fifty books; short stories, novels and essays. One of his best works is "Martin Eden" (1909).
