Exercise IV. Give English equivalents of the following words and word combinations:

Exercise V. Study more synonyms to the verbs from the text:

Supply – grant, contribute, give, produce, provide, stock, yield, store, fill.

Increase – build up, develop, enhance, enlarge, expand, extend, grow, multiply, raise, prolong.

Exercise VI. Underline the correct word in the brackets:

1. Goods sold to other countries, such as food, cars, machines, medicines, books, musical instruments, cassettes, discs and many others, are (visible, invisible) exports.

2. Services, such as insurance, freight, tourism, technical expertise, medical operations and others sold to other countries are invisible (imports, exports).

3. The difference between total earnings of a country and its total expenditure is called its balance of (payments, trade).

4. The difference between a country’s earnings for its visible exports and expenditure for its visible imports is called its balance of (payments, trade).

Read the dialogues: a). Bill: I expect you to be in the office earlier tomorrow to do some urgent work. Nancy: When do you expect me to come? Bil: At 8.30. b). Susan: Why did you buy a French book? Nelly: I want my son to begin learning French. c). Brown: What else can I do for you, Mr Stepanov? Stepanov: I’d like you to give me your contract form if possible.

Note (EN):

The Objective Infinitive Construction (Complex Object) consists of a nominal element (a noun in the Common case or a pronoun in the Objective case) and an Infinitive which is in predicate relation to the noun in the Common case or the pronoun in the Objective case. The whole construction forms a complex object of some verbs. It is rendered in Russian by anobject clause.

Після дієслів to want, to expect, should/would like та інших застосовується конструкція Complex Object, «складний додаток», в яку входить займенник об’єктивного відмінку або іменник, який означає лице або предмет та інфінітив дієслова, який виражає дію, яку виконує це лице або цей предмет.

Exercise VII. Find the Objective Infinitive Construction in the following sentences:

1. I would like my daughter to study English.

2. They expect us to increase the order.

3. The firm would like him to deliver the goods promptly.

4. She wants them to start producing the Model AB machines.

Read the sentences: 1. – Is Jane in? – I think so. I heard her come in some minutes ago. 2. We watched the train leave the station. 3. Mrs. Blake watched the children play in the garden. 4. I heard somebody call my name.

Note (UK):

Конструкція Complex Object застосовується також після дієслів сприйняття: to see, to hear, to watch, to notice, to feel. Інфінітив дієслова у цьому випадку використовується без частки to і висловлює закінчену дію.

Exercise VIII. Change the sentences as in the model and write them:

Model: The Director made a speech at the meeting. I heard it.
