I heard the Director make a speech at the meeting




1. The engineers were discussing the performance of the machine. Mr.Dunn heard this.

2. Borisov bought some envelopes at the post-office a few minutes ago. I saw him.

3. The manager said we would buy some computers from BML*. We heard this.

4. Mr.Brown promised to deliver the machines promptly. Our manager heard this.

5. Every year the Lord Mayor drives through London streets. A lot of Londoners watch this.

 

Exercise IX. Study some English proverbs and explain them:

1. The business is a good as done.

2. A man without a smiling face must not open a shop.

3. A great fortune is a great slavery.

4. He who begins many things, finishes but few.

Grammar: Phrasal verbs (separable and non-separable)
Verbs are often used with the following words:
in on up away round over by about  
out off down back through forward along    
So you can say put out / get on / take off / run awayetc. These verbs are phrasal verbs. Some common phrasal verbs (separable): Figure out – find the solution to a problem Pick up – lift Put off – postpone Throw away – put in a trash Write down – write a note on a piece of paper, etc Some common phrasal verbs (non-separable): Call on – ask to speak in class Run into – meet by chance Get on – enter Get off – leave, etc
                           

 

Exercise X. Complete the sentences with the following particles: away, down, in, off, on, out, up:

1. Before I left home this morning, I put…… my coat.

2. When I got to class this morning, I took my coat…….

3. Johnny made a story……. He didn’t tell the truth.

4. Alice looked a word…… in her dictionary.

5. The secretary threw…… yesterday’s newspaper.

 

Exercise XI. Now do the same with these sentences. Discuss the meaning of the phrasal verbs:

1. While I was walking down the street, I ran…… an old friend.

2. Last week I flew from Chicago to Miami. I got…… the plane in Chicago, and I got…… the plane in Miami.

3. I take the bus to my University every day. I get…… the bus at the corner of Teliga Street and Shamrylo Street. I get…… the bus just a block away from the University building.

4. When the student raised his hand, the professor called…… him.

 

Exercise XII. Do the following tasks:

1. Name some things that you turn on.

2. Name some means of transportation that you get in.

3. Name some that you get out of.

4. Name some things that you turn off.

 

Exercise XIII. Complete and translate:

Exercise XIV. Pay attention to the following way of word-building. Read and translate the pairs of words. Mind the stresses:

To pre’sent – a ‘present

To sub’ject – a ‘subject

To ob’ject – an ‘object

To dec’rease – a ‘decrease

To inc’rease – an ‘increase

To re’cord – a ‘record

To pro’gress – a ‘progress

To con’duct – a ‘conduct
