TO and –ING

INFINITIVE WITHOUT TO ( Examples: go, speak)

Used after ‘auxiliary verbs’:

can I can speak German.

could Could you speak more slowly?

will It will rain tomorrow.

should You should be at home.

do Does he smoke?

Don’t stop!

let’s Let’s have a drink.

INFINITIVE WITH TO (Examples: to go, to speak)

Used in many kinds of sentence. After:

something Would you like something to eat?

nothing There’s nothing to do.

anything Have you got anything to drink?

I’m sorry I’m sorry to trouble you.

Also used after many verbs:

would like Would you like to dance?

would love I’d love to speak German.

hope I hope to see you soon.

want I don’t want to go home.

have You have to change at the next station.

And used to say why we do things:

‘Why did you come here?’ ‘To see you.’

- ING FORM (Examples: going, speaking)

Used in many kinds of sentence. After some verbs:

like I like speaking French.

love I love going to the theatre.

hate I hate waiting for people.

 

And after all prepositions:

after After seeing the doctor I felt better.

before Before going to bed I usually read the paper.

for Thank you for inviting me.

at She’s good at swimming.

without Can you get there without changing?

 

And in the Present Progressive tense:

‘What are you doing?’ ‘I’m writing letters.’
