AMY’S VALLEY OF HUMILIATION

Find the following words and word combinations in the text of Chapter 7 and translate them into your mother-language.

Find in the text and translate the following passages:

1. Next day Amy was rather late at school, but could not resist the temptation of displaying, with pardonable pride, a moist brown-paper parcel, before she consigned it to the inmost recesses of her desk. – The word `limes' was like fire to powder, his yellow face flushed, and he rapped on his desk with an energy which made Jenny skip to her seat with unusual rapidity.

2. There was a simultaneous sigh, which created quite a little gust, as the last hope fled, and the treat was ravished from their longing lips. – That hiss, faint as it was, irritated the irascible gentleman, and sealed the culprit's fate.

3. That was dreadful. – The fifteen minutes seemed an hour, but they came to an end at last, and the word “Recess!” had never seemed so welcome to her before.

Recall the situations from the story suggested by the following sentences:

1. “In debt, Amy? What do you mean?”

2. “Bring with you the limes you have in your desk,” was the unexpected command which arrested her before she got out of her seat.

3. “Your hand, Miss March!” was the only answer her mute appeal received, and too proud to cry or beseech, Amy set her teeth, threw back her head defiantly, and bore without flinching several tingling blows on her little palm.

4. “Yes, you can have a vacation from school, but I want you to study a little every day with Beth,” said Mrs. March that evening.

Speak on the following:

1. Speak on Amy’s debt.

2. Describe the relations between the schoolchildren. Compare them with relations between adults.

3. Describe Mr. Davis Amy’s teacher.

4. Speak on Amy’s punishment.

5. Speak on punishments in general (deserved punishment, undeserved punishment, corporal punishment). Give your attitude to punishments (at schools, in families).

Make up the situation round the following sentences:

3. “That's good! I wish all the girls would leave, and spoil his old school. It's perfectly maddening to think of those lovely limes.”
