THE SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD УМОВНИЙ СПОСІБ

В англійській мові існує три способи: дійсний (Indicative Mood), наказовий (Imperative Mood), умовний (Subjunctive Mood).

У дійсному способі виражається реальна дія, а у наказовому — наказ щодо виконання дії. В умовному способі виражається можлива, бажана, необхідна дія або дія можлива за якихось обставин.

В залежності від дії, що висловлюється, умовний спосіб може бути поділений на умовний спосіб теперішнього часу — Present Subjunctive (Subjunctive I) та умовний спосіб минулого часу — Past Subjunctive (Subjunctive II).

The Analytic Form

Синтетична форма утворюється з інфінітива без "to" для всіх осіб однини і множини e.g. It is necessary that the plates of a condenser be well insulated from one another. Необхідно, щоб обкладки конденсатора були ретельно ізольовані один від одного. Ця форма Subjunctive часто використовується після таких зворотів як: It is important that.... It is essential that.... It is necessary that.... It is desirable that.... It is required that....

Аналітична форма утворюється за допомогою should (для всіх осіб однини і множини) та інфінітива смислового дієслова. Використовується у підрядних реченнях, якщо в головному реченні є дієслова require, demand, propose, suggest, desire, wish або іменники requirement, demand, proposal. При цьому у підрядних реченнях використовуються сполучники that (щоб), so that (так щоб), in order that (для того щоб), lest (щоб не), but for (якби не), e.g. The main requirement is that both systems should be assembled at the place of destination. Головна вимога полягає у тому, щоб обидві системи були б зібрані у місці призначення. Write down your home-task lest you should forget it. Запишіть домашнє завдання, щоб не забути його.

The Analytic Form

Синтетична форма утворюється за допомогою дієслова be у формі were для всіх осіб однини і множини. Інші дієслова мають форму, яка збігається з формою Past Indefinite. Вживається у простих реченнях та у підрядних після сполучників if (якщо), as though та as if (так ніби, якби), e.g. If there were no frictional losses in a machine, it would be 100% efficient. Якщо б не було витрат на тертя, то коефіцієнт корисної дії машини дорівнював би 100%. І wish she were here with us. Я хотів би, щоб вона була б тут з нами. / І wish I knew about it earlier. Я хотів би знати про це раніше. / Шкода що я не знав про це раніше.

Аналітична форма складається з should (для 1-ї особи однини і множини) чи would (для 2-ї та 3-ї особи однини і множини) та інфінітива (простого або перфектного) смислового дієслова. Використовується у головному реченні складнопідрядного речення або у простому реченні, коли мається на увазі, що дія могла б мати місце за певних обставин e.g. This object wouldweigh only 1/4 of a pound at 4,000 miles above the sea level. Цей об'єкт важив би тільки 1/4 фунту на висоті 4000 миль над поверхнею моря. If there had been less people we should have found him in the square. Якщо б булo менше людей, то ми б знайшли його на площі.

Правила перекладу умовного способу:

1) дієсловом у минулому часі з часткою "би"

If my son were here he would help us to do this. Якщо б мій син був би тут, він би допоміг нам зробити це.

2) інфінітивом, особливо у випадку, коли дієслово-присудок має форму пасивного стану

If this temperature scale be used in the experiment you should transform the measurements in the Celsius temperature. Якщо використовувати цю температурну шкалу в експерименті, то доведеться трансформувати заміри в температуру за Цельсієм.

3) дієсловом у майбутньому часі в сполученні з модальними словами "мабуть", "очевидно".
