The US artillery is divided into Field Artillery (FA) and Air Defense Artillery (ADA). The main mission of FA is ground fire support.

FA is equipped with cannons and missiles. FA cannons are classified according to the caliber and weight as light (120 mm and less), medium (greater than 120 mm but less than 210 mm), heavy (greater than 160 mm but less than 210mm), very heavy (greater than 210 mm). Mobility: According to the means of transportation FA cannons are classified as towed (designed for movement by a separate vehicle generally termed a prime mover), SP (installed on carriages from which the cannon is fired), and aerial (carried on airmobile vehicles). SP cannons may be tracked or wheeled. According to the firing characteristics FA weapons are classified as guns and howitzers. Projectiles of guns and howitzers have different trajectories. A gun is a cannon firing a projectile with a flat trajectory, therefore, guns are often used for direct fire. A howitzer fires a projectile with a high trajectory.

FA msls are classified as free rocket and guided missiles (GMs). GMs are classified according to their range capability as short-range GMS (max range less than 100 km), medium range GMs (max range 100 km but less than 500 km), and long range GMs (max range 500 km and more).

ADA is a separate combat arm of the Army since1968. The main mission of ADA is AA protection. ADA provides protection by firing on aerial targets. ADA can be used for direct support and reinforcement of FA fire.

ADA is equipped with guns and guided missiles. ADA guns are classified according to the caliber and weight as light (less than 90 mm), medium (90 mm), heavy (more than 90 mm). According to their mobility ADA guns are classified as fixed, towed, SP or portable.

ADA GMs are classified according to the guidance systems as remote-controlled and homing msls.

Besides ADA GMs are divided into two classes. The first class covers those missiles, which are designed to destroy stationary targets located on the surface of the earth. They are called surface-to surface and air-to-surface missiles. The second class covers those missiles, which are designed to destroy moving targets. They are called surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles.
