People are different and their interests and favourite occupations are different, too. Some of them are quite ordinary like sports, reading, films, or travelling.

A lot of people prefer to go out as often as they can. If you live in a big city, you can always choose where to go: there are theatres, cinemas, concert halls, restaurants, cafes there. If you enjoy dancing, you can go to discos. Lots of young people think it's the best rest after a long week of studies.

Many people get tired of fast and noisy life and look for something quiet in their free time, for example, collecting something. Most people can say they had collections when they were children. But only some of them don't give up their hobbies and their collections can become very important. For example, the famous Tretyakov gallery in Moscow started from a collection of pictures of Pavel Mikhailovich Treryakov. Collecting pictures was one of his favourite occupations.

Some hobbies are very original. There are people who look for old songs, study the night sky or make musical instruments. Our world is beautiful and endless, and there are hundreds of things people can do in their free time. It's wonderful when your hobby makes you kinder and cleverer, and fills your life with good feelings and emotions.

I think one of the most popular hobbies is music. Most people like music. We need it when we are in good and in bad mood, when we work, when we rest, when we are merry and sad. Cheerful music changes your mood and makes you more optimistic. For many people music is more than only listening to it. They play musical instruments and devote a lot of their free time to it. As for me, I've got a guitar and enjoy playing it. My friends and I often sing to it together. We usually do it in the evenings and sometimes, at the weekends, stay up late. I like to play all kinds of music: classics, folk, jazz, pop or rock. I need just good music. My friends are not like me. Roger for example prefers classics and jazz. We always go to the concert hall together. It's a wonderful rest! Nell and Andy get bored with classical music. They love rock-n-roll. Alice doesn't like rock very much but she's fond of other kinds of music. One of her hobbies is col­lecting discs of the best jazz singers of all times. Alice is our guide in the world of music and we often learn about good new singers and groups from her.
