The two main groups of tourism companies are tour operators and travel agencies. Tour operators make up tour packages. They study tourism

market, make advertisement and sell their tours to travel agencies or direct to the public.

Travel agencies work with the public, selling tours and services. Large travel agencies can act as tour operators. They can form groups of travellers or work with individual customers. A lot of travel companies have a lot of their outlets in different parts of a city, region, country and even of the world. You can find travel agency outlets at hotels, airports, railway stations and other places. The prices and the services are the same there.

There are also tourist information offices or centres at many large airports, railway stations, hotels and resorts. They give tourists information about transportation, accommodation, sightseeing and other things interesting to travellers.

Any hotel begins from the receptionist who greets guests at the recep­tion, or front desk, in the lobby. The duties of the receptionist are to check in and out guests, check their booking if there is any, give them keys to their rooms and any information about the hotel services if they need it. Some hotels have registration forms. Receptionists help guests to fill them correctly. They also answer phone calls, take phone messages for the guests of the hotel when they are not in and give them their mail.

In large hotels there are concierges. They give hotel guests informa­tion about the city, its shops, sights, transport, restaurants and other things that interest them. Concierges also help guests to book flights, restaurant tables and excursions, to find a guide, to use mail and so on. Concierges must speak foreign languages. In large hotels they usually know English, German, French and Spanish.

The head of any hotel is the hotel manager {general manager). He runs the hotel: hires the staff, controls the work of all the services, solves different problems guests can have. When the general manager is not in, other managers {assistant manager, night manager...) do his duties.

Other people on the staff of hotels are securities who protect guests, bellboys, who show guests to their rooms and can help them with their luggage, chambermaids {maids) who clean the rooms, cooks and many others.
