Key points for successful play projects

Play project is a teaching technology aimed at creating the program of activities or services which is new and is performed under the teacher’s leadership.

The essence the technology is as follows:

- Students choose roles and work in small groups at professional tasks;

- The results of the project have to be submitted to the expert board and be evaluated;

- The teacher performs as the manager of the process and creates conditions for successful project work.

- Planning;

- Implementing;

- Completing.

In play projects students choose roles determined by nature and the content of the project. However, the teacher as the manager of the project has to take into account the following aspects:

- level of interpersonal skills of the students

- interpersonal relations in the group

- psychological compatibility of the project members

 

The role of the project manager:

- is demanding and stimulating

- requires a rare mix of skills and abilities

- is the key factor in the success of a project

 

The project manager must be able to:

- integrate rather than divide

- provide the means rather than oversee

- see the ‘big picture’ rather than the detailed tunnel vision view

- lead and motivate teams

- communicate

- organize the required resources, people and information

- take decisions

 

Student project teams

A good team is essential to a successful project. Project teams are different to groups, and their members:

- have shared purposes

- undertake cooperative actions

- generate collective outcomes

- create defined team ‘product’

Project team members should be chosen for:

- their functional skills

- their decision making and problem solving skills

- their skills in working with other team members

 

Projects can have problems which:

- can be about any aspect of the project

- can have a wide range of possible causes and an equally wide range of solutions

Project problems are solved by:

- collecting and analyzing information

- identifying the real problem

- generating alternative solutions

- choosing which alternative to implement

 

The effective and efficient use of the processes of monitoring and controlling are essential to project success. Project monitoring involves:

- measuring

- collecting

- recording

- collating

- analyzing information

The successful project is controlled by:

- measuring or monitoring what is happening

- comparing it to what should be happening

- adjusting the project inputs in ways which reflect the size and polarity of the difference.
