Main rules:When transforming statements, check whether you have to change: · pronouns · present tense verbs (3rd person singular) · place and time expressions · tenses changes 1. Change the pronoun according to who says what in the reported speech. e.g. Susan: "I workin an office." Susan says (that) sheworks in an office. 2. Do not change the tense if the introductory verb is in the Present Simple. (e.g. He says) Note, however, that you might have to change the form of the present tense verb (3^rd person singular) e.g. He says, “I speak English” - He says that he speaksEnglish. 3. Change the tense if the introductory verb is in the Past Simple. (e.g. He said)e.g. He said, “I am busy” – He said that he was busy. 4. The verbs could, should, would, must, might, needn’t, ought to, and used to do not normally change. 5. Use sayand tellin both direct and indirect speech. Tellis always used with a personal pronouns. We do not use (to) with tell. Saymay be used with or without a personal pronoun. It is followed by the preposition (to) when it is used by an object pronoun. e.g. He said, “Helen is late today.” He said (that) Helen was late that day. He said to me, “Helen is late today.” He said (that)/ told me(that) Helen was late that day. He told me, “Helen is late today.” He told me(that) Helen was late that day. 6. The Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous do not change in the reported speech. The ways of the verb tenses change
