Exceptions

You may not change the tense or if you agree with the original speaker.

Direct: Ann: “Washington is the capital of the USA.“

Indirect: She said that Washington is / was the capital of the USA.

It is not necessary to change the tense if there is a time expression indicating past.

Direct: “She left Boston on Monday.“

Indirect: He said that she left / had left Boston on Monday.

Do not change the tense in sentences with when / if.

Direct: “When I was having breakfast, the telephone suddenly rang.“

Indirect: She said that when she was having breakfast, the telephone suddenly rang.

Direct: “If I had more time, I would learn French.“

Indirect: He said that if he had more time, he would learn French.

Advise expressions with must, should and ought are usually reported using advise / urge.

Direct: “You must read that book.“

Indirect: He advised / urged me to read that book.

Use suggest and gerund or statement with should to report the expression let’s.

Direct: “Let’s go to the cinema.“

Indirect: He suggested going to the cinema.

Use indirect questions when we ask for information politely. The word order of indirect question is the same as in statements.

Direct: Where is a bus station?

Indirect: Do you know where the bus station is?
