How to have a successful Christian family

I. Прочтите текст и укажите, на какие вопросы в тексте есть ответы Y (Yes), а на какие нет – N (No):

1. What do people, who believe in God, desire for their children?

2. Who are the happiest persons on earth?

3. What is the first weapon in the war against the family today?

4. What does the Bible say about the family?

5. What do children need?

The great heritage Christian parents leave their children is love they receive in a Christian home. Apart from their devotion to Christ, the faithful people love and live for their children. Everything they talk about and plan around is for their kids’ benefit and welfare. The longer they live, the more they want to invest in their children. The first obligation of parents is to bring up children for God, who gave babies to them. The greatest desire of their hearts for their children is that they each find God’s will and live in it all their lives. But in the 20-s a great change has taken place. There has been and continues to be a violent attack upon the American family. More TV programs show homes of divorced or single parents that represent the traditional family. Nearly in every major family program TV openly justifies divorce, homosexuality, and adultery. Increased divorce has broken family loyalty, unity and communications with increased insecurity in children who are the victims. Many such children feel doubt about the possibility of real love, for fear they will be hurt again.

The happiest people on earth are those who are part of homes and families where they are loved and shielded. When you have a long day, often in a hostile environment, it is great to walk into your home and know that there you will find your spouse and children, who love you. Home is a shelter to which you run from the troubles of this world.

It’s necessary to help families win the undeclared war that is ravaging American homes. Each family is a battleground for the conflict going on today. The consequences of defeat are tragic. In the war against the family today, the first weapon is the cult of the playboy; men (they say) do not have to be committed to their wives and children, but should be some kind of “cool, free swingers”. Sexual promiscuity has become the lifestyle of America. Men satisfy their physical desires at the expense of their families. When the family begins to weaken, when that basic Christian unit is destroyed, we are on the precipice of real danger.

No wonder we are raising up a generation of children with no respect for authority, civil or otherwise. They have been brought up in homes where there is no authority and in which there is no guidance or leadership. Children need love, discipline and parental example. When they grow up without ever learning what the Bible has to say, without ever learning what prayer is they become weak people who, in turn, reproduce weak homes.

Another weapon against the family is the feminist revolution, the counter reaction to the cult of the playboy. Feminists say that self-satisfaction is more important than the family. Many women who lead in the feminist movement promote an immoral lifestyle.

We have now broken the circle of darkness called illiteracy. I like to study, but I have problems with a place to live. 3. There are only lectures at Cambridge.

4. Student goes to his tutor once a week.

5. The academic year is divided into 2 terms.

Cambridge is one of the two main Universities of England located at the Cam River. It was founded at the beginning of the twelfth century. The University consists of twenty-four different colleges including four colleges for women. Each college is self-governing.

The head of University is the chancellor who is elected for life. The teachers are commonly called “dons” and “tutors”. Part of teaching is organized by means of lectures. Besides lecture teaching is carried out by tutorial system for which the Cambridge University is famous all over the world. This is a system of individual tuition organized by the colleges.

Each student has a tutor who practically guides him through the whole course of studies. The tutor plans the student’s work and once a week the student goes to his tutor to discuss his work with him. The training course lasts four years. The academic year is divided into three terms. The students study natural and technical sciences: law, history, languages, geography and many other subjects.

After three years of study a student may proceed to a Bachelor’s degree, and later to the degrees of Master or Doctor. Students are required to wear gowns at lectures, in the University library, in the street in the evening, for dinners in the colleges and for official visits. All the students must pay for their education, examinations, books, laboratories, University hostels, the use of libraries, etc. Very few students get grants. Not many children from the working class families are able to get higher education as the cost is high. The cost of education depends upon the college and speciality.

2. When do teachers mark the absent students?

5. What is ELTI?

During the orientation week, new students at ELTI (English Language Training Institute) take evaluation tests that will be used to place them in the proper level for their classes. Returning students are placed according to their exit exams, grades and teacher recommendations. If possible, ELTI will avoid assigning returning students to the same teacher for the same subject. If there are enough students from different sections of a class, students will usually be assigned so that each class has balance of students from different language background. The first day of class is used for “second-day testing”, where all students are tested again to make sure they are in the correct level. After classes begin, teachers may recommend that incorrectly placed students be moved, but students may not change sections in the same level.

Attending all your classes is important because you can speak and listen to your teacher and classmates, ask questions, and learn many things about English and US culture. Missing class means missing important information. You should attend all classes, but ELTI requires that each student attend at least 80 % of his or her classes to receive a passing grade. If you miss 20 % or more of your class, you’ll automatically fail it. To attend ELTI the next semester, you must write a letter explaining why you missed so many classes. A committee of teachers and the director will decide if you may continue. You may not return to ELTI if you fail two semesters in a row. It is your responsibility to follow this policy. Punctuality is also a must. Classes begin on time. If you arrive late, you may be marked absent.

You must complete all assignments on time. Each instructor will tell you the assignment policy at the beginning of each term. It is your responsibility to follow your teacher’s policy. Copying the words or ideas of other people is called plagiarism and is a serious offence in ELTI and elsewhere in the US. Cheating is also a very serious matter in academic work. If you plagiarize or cheat, you’ll fail the test or assignment. Students receive a certificat e. Students must successfully complete all the work in every course to advance to the next level. Students with two semesters of failing grades will be asked not to return to ELTI.

The Great Patriotic War broke out in 1941. It was a difficult ruthless1 war during which all people suffered from famine2 and deprivations3. Many factories and plants were evacuated to different safe regions. The Leningrad Machine Plant named after Kirov was evacuated to Chelyabinsk. Now it is the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant but in 1942 it was called the Tank Plant because our Army needed much military equipment: tanks, projectiles4, ammunition5. New specialists capable of designing new machines were needed in our country. So on the 15 th of December 1943 the Chelyabinsk Mechanical Engineering Institute was established to train such specialists

on the basis of the Stalingrad Polytechnical Institute evacuated to Chelyabinsk.

There were two faculties: the Tank Faculty and the Mechanical Technological Faculty. 80 students and 14 teachers began the first academic year. The student’s life was strict: a student didn’t get a scholarship if he missed the classes three days a month; if a student missed the classes five days a month he was excluded from the Institute. In January 1951 the Chelyabinsk Mechanical Engineering Institute was converted into the Chelyabinsk Polytechnical Institute.

In 1990 the Institute was transformed into the Technical University. And the Technical University was renamed into the SUSU in 1997. Now our University, the South Ural State University, is one of the largest Universities in Russia. It trains specialists for various branches of industry, economics and the humanities as well. There are 35 daytime, evening and extra-mural departments in our University. Over 57000 students and postgraduates study in it. The University has 177 chairs. There are 2500 teachers in it. Our University has six modern buildings. There are libraries, reading-halls, well-equipped laboratories and a computer center. The literature, theatre and scientific societies are organized in the University. The students have eight hostels, the Palace of Sports and the hospital.

For more than sixty years the University has been greatly extended and improved. The students have all the facilities for efficient studying, leisure and sport. A student will be a good specialist if he takes up research. The research helps the student to use their knowledge in practice. The further development of our University is connected with scientific and technological progress. The higher school must meet the requirements of steadily developing science and technology. It will continue to improve the training of highly skilled specialists who could cope with the present-day problems.

Unit III MY future job

Text A

What Job?

I. Прочтите текст и укажите, на какие вопросы в тексте есть ответы Y (Yes), а на какие нет – N (No):

1. What steps should you take to get a new job?

2. What role do friends and family play in your process of finding your job?

3. What documents must you have to get a new job?

4. What are common mistakes when people try to get a new job?

5. Who can help you to find a new job?

First of all, let’s just get one thing straight. Nobody’s born knowing what they want to do – the smug smiles on the faces of those people with great careers have usually taken timework to get. If you’ve got your eye on a top job, get ready to make a lot of efforts and to spend a lot of time. Some people know what they want and how to get their end goals. They have also got some suggestions of some of the huge variety of job options that are open to you. So, if you’ve ever wondered what it takes to become a circus performer, a high flying manager or a personal trainer; if you are wondering whether office jobs really are as boring as they sound, or if you’re really just looking for some direction, get a taste for working life and separate fact from fiction as everyday people reveal what they do for a living. You’ve worked out what your goals are... now what? Imagine you’ve already reached your final goal and work backwards: how did you get there? What steps did you have to take? Write down all the steps you’d take in order, and think about how you can achieve them. This exercise does two things: it makes your final goal seem more realistic and maps out your route to get there. It breaks your final goal down into lots of mini-goals, which you can start working on right now?

Here are some suggestions:

- Buy a diary.

- Transfer the information from your plan into your diary, on the specific dates. It’s important to have people around for support. They will be there to keep you on track, pick you up and also share in your successes.

Reviews:

- Look at your plan on a regular basis and check how you’re getting on. Is there anything you need to add or change?

- You’ve worked out what order you need to do things in, you’ve set yourself goals and broken them down. Now it’s time to put it all into action.
