Text B. Some Useful Facts About Executive Recruitment

How can you more, effectively use executive recruiters to promote your career to the next level? Here are some tips on applying to recruiters.

Be visible.

Call or write the publisher of the industry directory and ask to include your name in your present company's listing.

Mail to recruiters in your field. Send them your resumes and cover letters.

Make the resume and cover letter short, to the point and understandable. Large firms receive over 100 resumes per day and they are not going to read every word. They look for "keywords" which relate to past experience and positions and specific accomplishments.

Include a benefit statement in the "objective" section. For example, "To increase your company's share of the telecommunications market by gaining new clients and more effectively selling to your present customers."

Indicate your willingness to relocate.

Be specific about your accomplishments. Name names!

Use plain English. Remember, you are seeking job, you are not applying to be a university professor.

Be honest. Any good recruiter will check the references. He matches the interests of the client with those of the candidate.

Don't fax your resume! Recruiters hate unsolicited faxed resumes! Most of them throw them out. Don't waste money on unnecessary expensive mailing. Use plain paper and envelopes about 52 cents each. Expensive mailing is not one bit more effective that a clear, concise resume sent first class.

Don't call the recruiters to ask if they got your resume. Some recruiters get so irritated by calls that resumes are instantly deleted.

When your resume is received, you will either be

(1) contacted if you are a possible candidate and placed, (2) considered, (3) put in the database or (4) deleted.

Exercise 11. Answer the following questions.

1. What should a job seeker do to be visible?

2. Why is it recommended to include your name in your present company's listing in the industry directory?

3. What must the resume and cover letter be like?

4. Do recruiters like to receive unsolicited taxed resumes?

5. Should you call the recruiters to ask if they got your resume?

6. What will happen when your resume is received by the recruiter?
