1. There are 3 classes of verbs in English: auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliary verbs and full verbs.

a) Auxiliary verbs are helping verbs. They show tense and number.

They may be alone in the sentence or along with main verbs. When they are alone they have their own meaning (a).

When they are with a form of the main verb they are auxiliaries (b).

e.g. (a)I am at home now. (b)I am reading now.
I have two books. I have booked a room.
I do my room every day. I do not speak French.

b) Modal verbs are also auxiliary verbs because they help other verbs, but unlike auxiliaries they have their own meaning, e.g. can expresses ability.

e.g. I can speak French.

c) Full verbs are all the other verbs in English; they have their own meaning and different grammatical forms,

e.g. I want to go home. (Present Simple )

He wanted to go home as early as possible. (Past Simple)

She has already gone to school. (Present Perfect)

2. Auxiliaries verbs are used in forming questions and making sentences negative.

e.g. Do you like hitch-hiking?

He does not speak French.

Auxiliaries are used to form tag questions and short answers.

e.g. They like traveling much, don’t they?

Yes, they do. No, they don't.

Auxiliaries are used with too, either, so and neither.

e.g. Steve is working. - So is John. = John is too.

Jerry has never liked seaside-resorts. – Neither has John or John hasn’t either.

3. The auxiliary verbs do, be and have are used to express various grammatical functions, namely to form questions and negatives and to form tenses.
