I have lots of friends

1. I don’t have much time to do sights.

2. We haven’t got many day-trippers this season.

3. There are not many animals in the park, which can have home they deserve.

4. The Natural History Museum doesn’t dedicate much of its limited resources to scientific research.

5. Cruise liners have not put much of their efforts into developing their shore excursion programmes.

6. Few guests have left the party and joined the tour.

7. Few tourists visit Sicily every year to enjoy almost every period of Mediterranean culture.

Ex. 32. Listen, study and act out the dialogue.

Eliza Crighton: I could do with a bit of cultural life.

George Hawk: May I offer my assistance?

E.C.: O.K. It’s a shame to be in London and not to enjoy its attractions to the full. I find art very inspiring.

G.H.: That’s good. I suggest we sort out our plans first. There must be a list of attractions at the Reception which gives opening and closing times.

E.C.: Making choice doesn’t come easily to me. It’s a pity you can’t take in everything at one go.

H.W.: Let’s do it this way. The Science Museum to start with while we’re still fresh for serous things. And then there is the National Gallery, the Tate Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts to choose from. They’re absolutely a must for anybody who is fond of painting. Are you?

E.C.: Very much. Especially of the Impressionists.

H.W.: Really? Amazing! I wonder what other interests we might share.

E.C.: We’ll find out as we go along. But let’s be realistic. We’d completely worn out if we tried. And the impressions would be rather superficial (= надуманный), I’m afraid. So, again the problem of choice.

H.W.: I want you to decide.

E.C.: I suggest we go to the Royal Academy of Arts. There’s a visiting exhibition on at the moment.

H.W.: To good to be true. "Twentieth-century Modern Masters". It’s unique chance to see Chagall, Dali, Picasso and Vlamink all at once. What do you say to such a magnificent company?

E.C.: What about the tickets? We’ll spend the whole day queuing up, won’t we? We couldn’t waste our time.

H.W.: I suppose so. But I don’t think there are many true lovers of this type of art. It is not like Madam Tussaud’s where people do queue up from early morning till closing time.

(Hello, Britain!)

Ex. 33. Read the text about a provincial city. Make notes about the sights and make up oral description of the city using your notes.
