Ex. 27. Read the text and explain the tenses in it.

The Central Economic Region has typical Russian Landscape of birch trees and plains. The region is intersected by three great rivers: the West Dvina, Dnieper, and Volga, all rising in the Valdai Hills.

Moscow in the centre of European part became the ruling centre in the 15^th century under Ivan the Great who had rebuilt the Kremlin as a symbol of his power. In the beginning of the 18^th century Peter the Great moved the capital to St Petersburg, but in 1918 it was transferred back to Moscow.

Here 20 per cent of the entire industrial output of the former Soviet Union was concentrated. To the west of Moscow Smolensk, a picturesque old Russian town with many places of interest and famous Kremlin is situated on the banks of the River Dnieper. To the north medieval Russian towns Rostov and Yaroslavl’ on the Volga will be great tourist attractions. East of Moscow lies Suzdal and Vladimir with their beautiful uncomparable Russian architecture. Suzdal’, Vladimir, Ivanovo, Kostroma, Yaroslavl’, Rostov, Pereyaslavl’-Jalessky and Sergiev Pasad enter the number of famous old towns formed the so-called Gold Ring of Russia.

Nizhni-Novgorod is going to be the third largest city in Russian Federation. It is called Nizhni to distinguish it from Novgorod the Great in the North. Before revolution its annual fair was the largest and superb (=the most famous) in Russia.
