Icy sun on St peterburg

As big snowflakes fall silently between the tall trees, the Lazarevskoye cemetery is a magical and lonely scene. It is the final resting place for dozens of Russian artists including Dostoevsky and Tcheikovsky, and increasing popular destination for foreign tourists.

St Petersburg has many hidden spot like this, that are as good as over-familiar tourist attractions of the West. The most beautiful time of the year for a short break is late January and February when the snow is still on the ground and the misty air is icy cold. St Petersburg is certainly one of the world’s grandest winter cities.

The grandious and colorful architecture, with its surprising blues, greens and pinks, would look farteless in more southern climates, but here the colours go beautifully with the snow and the pale winter light.

Peter the Great started building the city in 1703. He imported Italian architects to make buildings bigger and better than anywhere else in Europe and much of the city does feel like a Venice for giant. In fact, distances in St Petersburg are so great that it is a good idea to travel by bus or taxi when visiting the city.

In St Petersburg your senses never rest. You feel, smell and experience life more vividly here than in any other European city. Although the city has been neglected for nearly a century now, its brilliant cultural past is obvious everywhere you do, and its unique beauty charms most visitors.
