a)In words of French origin GA tends to have stress on the final syllable, while RP has it on the initial one:

ballet [baelei] [bae'lei]

beret [beri] [ba'rei]

b)Some words have first-syllable stress in GA whe/eas in RP the stress may be elsewhere.

- Some compound words have stress on the first element in GA and in RP they retain it on the second element: weekend, ice-cream, hotdog, New Year.

- Polysyllabic words ending in -ory, -ary, -mony have secondary stress in GA, often called "tertiary": laboratoryflaebra.tori], dictionary fdikja.neri], secretary [*sekra,teri], testimonyftesti,mouni].

GA intonation on the whole is similar to that of RP. But there are, of course, some differences that should be mentioned here. 1. In sentences where the most common pre-nuclear contour in RP is a gradually descending sequence, the counterpart GA contour is a medium Level Head:

I don't want to go to the theatre.2. The usual Medium or Low Fall in RP has its rising-falling coun­terpart in GA:Come and see me tomorrow.3. The rising terminal tone in RP in GA has a mid-rising contour: Do you like it?It should also be mentioned that the distribution of terminal tonesin sentence types is also different in both variants of English.1. GA "Yes, No" questions commonly have a falling terminal tone;the counterpart RP tone would be a rising one:Shall we stay here 2. Leave-takings are often pronounced with a high-pitched Fall-Rise ' in GA:“Good night”.

Das Wort "Phonetik" ist griechischer Herkunft und bedeutet "Laut, Stimme". Daher bezeichnet man recht oft Phonetik als Lautlehre. Aber diese Definition erweist sich bei näherer Betrachtung als unzulänglich, denn bei solcher Definition liegen solche phonetischen Erscheinungen, wie Betonung, Intonation außerhalb dieser Definition. Diesbezüglich schreibt Prof. L.R.Sinder mit Recht, daß der Gegenstand der Phonetik die Lautmittel in all ihren Erscheinungsformen und Funktionen sind. So eine Definition ist umfangreicher, präziser: sie erfaßt nicht nur die linealen phonetischen Einheiten (Laute), sondern auch die suprasegmentalen - Betonung, Intonation, Silbe, Akzentgruppe, phonetische Worter, Sprechtakte, Phrasen etc.).
Bis Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts war Phonetik keine selbständige linguistische Disziplin. Man behandelte sie als einen Bestandteil der Grammatik (siehe z.B. die Arbeiten von H.Paul, W.A.Bogorodizkij, I.I.Mestschaninow, Wostokow etc.).
Phonetik als eine Sprach-, Gesellschafts- und gleichzeitig Naturwissenschaft ist aufs engste mit mehreren linguistischen und nicht linguistischen Disziplinen verbunden: mit Syntax (durch die Intonation), mit Morphologie (durch den Phonembestand der Morpheme), mit Lexikologie (durch phonetische Gesetzmäßigkeiten bei der Bildung der einzelnen Worter), sowie auch mit Mathematik, Physik, Informationstheorie, Sprachheilpädagogik, Gesangunterricht, Sprecherziehzung etc.
