Inf is the basic arm of the Army. Out of seven types of divs, four are inf (mech inf, inf, light inf and motorized inf divs). Inf is also the arm of close combat. Its mission is to close with the enemy by fire and maneuver in order to destroy or capture him, or to hold its positions and repel his attacks by fire, close combat, or counterattacks.

Inf is capable of fighting under different conditions of terrain, weather and nuclear availability. It can move by land, sea or air. The modern infantry can conduct mounted and dismounted combat, or go into action by parachute, helicopter or assault boat. Inf can operate at night, or under any climatic conditions and can overcome natural and manmade obstacles which stop other forces.

The advent of nuclear weapons has changed the role of inf on the battlefield but has brought to life mech inf which move and fight in APCs and IFVs.

US inf consists of units. The sqd is the smallest and basic mil unit. The plat consists of two or more sqds, and of the plat leader, an off in the grade of Ltn. The co is commanded by a Cpt. It includes the Hq and two or more plats. The bn is commanded by a LC and it includes its staff and Hq with two, three, or four mech cos and AT co.

Inf units of the US Army are armed with individual small arms. (.45 automatic pistols, M16A1 (A2) automatic rfls, 40mm M203 grenade launchers and carbines and crew-served small arms (.30mgs,.50mgs, 5.56 mm M249 mgs, 81 mm morts, 4.2 inch morts, TOW and DRAGON ATGM).

In addition to small arms mech inf units are equipped with M113A1 (A2,A3) APCs, IFVs, M577 vehicles, CRVs and other vehicles. It is also equipped with radio sets.
