Mechanized Infantry Battalion in Defense. Defense (def) is one of the basic forms of combat

Defense (def) is one of the basic forms of combat. The main mission of defense is to hold positions and repel the enemy attacks.

The main forms of defense are the mobile defense (mob def) and the area defense (area def).

In the mob def the main forces are concentrated in the strong mob res, and the minimum forces are in the forward area. The main task of the mob def is to draw the enemy inside the defense positions, to direct his forces in the necessary direction and destroy him by counterattacks (catk).

In the area def the main forces are concentrated on the forward edge of the battle area (FEBA), and minimum forces are in the res.

The main task of the defender in area def is to hold positions and to destroy the enemy in front of the FEBA.

Large units (brigades, divs, corps, field armies) are capable of conducting both area and mob def. Small units, such as plats, cos, bns conduct only area def.

The mission of the bn in def is to repel and destroy the enemy by fire, close cmbt and catk.

The bn def area is organized in three echelons: Bn Security (Scty) Area, Bn Forward Def Area (Bn FDA), Bn Reserve Area (BRA).

Each unit prepares the main and the alternative positions. The fire positions are placed in the centre of the def area.

The organic maneuver elements of the bn are 4 mech inf cos and antitank co. Heavy mort plat, tk co and air defense co are attached to the bn in def.

The fire spt is provided by heavy mort plat, the antitank co and air def co.

The Command post (CP) is located in the centre of the FDA.

The Bn is capable of conducting a def with 3 cos forward and one in res on the frontage from 5 up to 8 km, with the depth from 3 to 5 kms. This battle formation is known as “ three-front-one-back”, or “three-up-one-down”.

The distance between the FEBA and the combat outpost line (COPL) may be up to 2 kms.

The frontage and the depth for mech inf co are from 1 500 up to 2 000 metres and up to 1100 meters respectively.

The mech inf co in def may be reinforced by heavy mort plat, tk plat and Msl Sec.

In BRA, FDA and Scty Area different obstacles are erected. They are: barbed wire entanglements, minefield and trenches.
