Grammar: Present Simple Tense

Text: Inorganic Molecules and Compounds

1. Translate and memorize the following words:

molecule to form chemical
equation to compose simple
statement to decompose atomic
formula to derive unlike
compound to designate nuclear
acid to indicate covalent
subscript to settle similar
charge to dissolve positive
atom to combine single

2. Pay attention to the reading of some words in plural. Memorize them:

analysis – analyses nucleus – nuclei
datum – data phenomenon – phenomena
formulae – formula

combination “ ch”:

chemist, chlorine, chloride, hydrochloric, stomach, chromium, technology, chemicals, technique, chlorate, technician, chromate.

4. Read the words correctly. Mind the reading rules of the letters:

“i/y” –iron, ion, iodine, nitrogen, nitride, nitrate, nitric, titanium, iridium;

“g” – germanium, argentum, gel, hydrogen, hydrargyrum, oxygen, gallium, homogeneous, genetics;

“c” – calcium, cobalt, cerium, copper, caesium, Centigrade, cadmium, carbon, silicon;

“u” – sulphur, uranium, plutonium, aurum, tellurium, plumbum, fluorine, mercury, tungsten.

5. Read the following words and define the parts of speech. Mind the stress:

molecule – molecular; form – formula – formulate – formulation; valent – valency – covalent; atom – atomic – diatomic - polyatomic; compose – composition – decompose - decomposition; react – reactive – reactivity – reaction; combine – combination; acid – acidic; derive – derivative; equal – equation – equality – equally; settle – settlement; similar – similarity.

Study and remember the following chart:

I work much in the lab. You do not/don’t work Dothey work much?
He/she works much at home. He/she does not work much at home. Does he/she work much?

Use the Present Simple Tense if an action takes place:

- often, seldom, sometimes, every minute(day, week, month, year),from time to time, once a month, twice a week, i.e. r e g u l a r l y;

- always, usually, i.e. g e n e r a l l y;

- or doesn’t take place at all.

Model: He collects minerals.Does he collect minerals?

What does he collect?

Who collect s minerals?

1. The scientist work at a very actual problem nowadays. 2. They collect the samples of ores in the expedition. 3. On Fridays she doesn’t work with the students in the lab. 4. We attend lectures every day. 5. My cousin teaches inorganic chemistry at the University. 6. Formulas indicate chemical reactions. 7. Numerical subscript designates the number of atoms in the molecule.

7. Open the brackets choosing the correct form of the verb:

1. This scientist (work/ works/ doesn’t work) in the field of inorganic chemistry, he deals with organic compounds. 2. She (take part/ doesn’t take part/ will take part) as she (doesn’t have/ has/ have) no time. 3. He (attends/ attend/ doesn’t attend) lectures on Sundays. 4. I (am not work/do not work/ work) in this laboratory every day, as senior students (do/does) their experiments some days a week here. 5.
