Hotels.

 

When traveling people almost always stay at hotels. It is advisable to remember the following things:

1. The first thing to do is to book a room in advance either by letter, telephone or telegram. Otherwise you may arrive at the hotel and they will tell you that there are no rooms.

2. On arrival at the hotel go to the reception desk in the lobby and confirm your reservation. The clerk will then give you a registration form to fill in and sign

(the form is filled in block letters). In smaller hotels you simply sign the visitor’s book and give your permanent address.

3. At large hotels you may ask for any service by telephone. You tell the operator if you wish to be called at a certain time, you call room service when you want a meal or drinks sent to your room, valet or maid service if you need something

(a suit or dress) cleaned or pressed.

4. Let the hotel management know well in advance the day and time of your departure.

John Lennon.

 

John Lennon was murdered just before 11 p.m. on the 8th December 1980 outside his home in the Dakota Apartment Building in New York City. He had just got out of a car, and was walking to the entrance when a voice called “Mr. Lennon”. Lennon turned, & was shot five times. The killer threw his gun down, & stood there smiling. “Do yon know what yon joust did?” shouted the doorman. “I just shot John Lennon,” to killer replied. Lennon was rushed to hospital in a police parlor car, but it was too late. The killer was 25 year-old. Mark Chapman from Hawaii. Earlier for his autograph. In fact, he had been hanging around outside days. Chapman was a fan of the Beatles & Lennon, & he had tried to imitate him in many ways. It is said that he even believed that he was John Lennon.

FOOTBALL IN ENGLAND

Football is, I suppose, the most popular game in England matches to see this rich & the important matches to see them all there, shouting & cheering for one side or the other. One of the most surprising things about football in England to a stranger is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of players in most of the important teams, he has photograph of them & know the results of large numbers of matches. He will tell you, who he expects will win such & such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times older.

Most schools in England take football seriously – much more seriously than nearly all European schools. In England, it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy’s mind with facts in the classroom education also means character training, & one the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games, where the boy has to learn to work with others for his team, instead of working selfishly himself alone.

The school therefore arranges games & matches for its pupils. Football is a good team game, it is good exercise for the body, it needs skill & a quick brain, it is popular & it is cheap: as a result, it is the schools favorite game.

THE DIFFICULTIES OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE.

 

There are numerous anecdotes about the difficulties of people travelling in foreign countries without knowledge of the language of that country. Here’s the story of a Frenchman travelling in the United States who, while eating in a restaurant, wished to order some mushrooms. Unable to make himself understood, he asked for a pencil & paper & carefully drew a picture of a mushroom. His drawing, however, was not too good, for the puzzled waiter returned in about ten menu not with an order of mushrooms, but with a large man’s umbrella. Another similar story concerns two Americans travelling in Spain. They were both unable to speak a word of Spanish & one day, while eating in a restaurant in a small village, they were having considerable difficulty in explaining to the waiter what they wanted. One of them wanted a glass of milk. The waiter seemed unable to understand.

Finally, on the back of the menu the man drew a picture of a cow. The poor waiter, however, still seemed puzzled. Finally he left & was gone from the restaurant for half an hour or so. He returned very pleased with himself. There were two tickets for a bullfight in his hand.

The English.

 

The English are a nation of stay-at-home. There is no place like home, they say. And when the man is not working, he withdraws from the world to the company of his wife and children, and busies himself with the affairs of the home. "The Englishman's home is his castle", is a saying known all over the world; and it is true that English people prefer small houses, built to house one family, perhaps with a small garden.

The fire is the focus of the English home. What do other nations sit around? The answer is they don't. they go out to cafes. For the English it is the open fire and the ceremony of English tea.

The English are among the most amiable people in the world: they can also be very ruthless. They have a genius for compromise on others with surprising efficiency. They are generous in small matters, but more cautious in big ones.

When William was 18 he said "good-bye" to his mother, left his village and went to London. After a few days he found a job in a bank in the city centre, and he also found a small flat in the suburbs to live in.

He hated the journey on the tube. There were always many people and he had to stand there for forty minutes.

After six months he won money on the horse races. He bought a little red car and a street map of London.

The first day he got up at 8 o’clock and reached a city centre at 9 o’clock but then he drove round and round looking for somewhere to park. At last he found a parking place but he was late for work.

The second day he sat for 20 minutes in a traffic jam and was late for work again. The third day he got up very early. It was a very cold morning and the car didn’t start. He ran to the tube station, but he was late again. His boss told him he had to be on time in future.

William didn’t want to lose his job. The next day he got up early and went to work by tube, but he forgot that it was Saturday. When he got to the bank he found that it was closed. What do you think he did? Yes, he sold his car, took his things from his flat and went back to his village in Wales.
