ASSISTANT Guidelines AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Check the assistant schedule for your times in the course and when you are facilitating the session alone. On each shift one assistant has the responsibility for laundry & storeroom runs, and one for the food. On the appropriate shift one assistant takes charge of work meditation preparation. On set-up day check that sufficient cleaning supplies are ready.
When waking up the participants at 4:45 a.m. ring bells (3 times) and announce: “ Sit up and hold your koan. ” Make sure everyone sits up. Wait a few moments, then announce: “You have 15 minutes to put away your bedding, brush your teeth, prepare the room and be ready for the first session.” ( First day, add: “Do not take a shower now.”) Structure: Participants sit facing each other. The session facilitator decides and announces which side will ask their partner the koan: i.e. " The partners facing the door start asking the koan....... “Tell me, who is in?” Make sure that participants do not change the wording of the koan in any way. After exactly 5 minutes hit the gong once and announce: “Thank your partner … … change over.”
When making this or any other announcement your voice is loud enough, clear and centered but not carrying emotion – people are sensitive to the tone of our voices. When we are sleepy they get sleepy; when we are alert they will pick it up, too.
The session usually lasts 40 minutes. At the end ring the gong and announce: “Thank your partner – close your eyes. Hold your koan.” After a short while announce: “Clean up your space – Take 5 minutes to...” (They can go to the toilet, drink some water, move their body, get some fresh air, whatever).
