Concealing illegal drugs within the walls, floors, ceilings, and frames of containers and trailers has become a very common method of smuggling large quantities of illegal drugs into the United States. Smugglers have also utilized the framing, fuel tanks, tanks, and other component parts of chassis. Although smugglers are becoming quite sophisticated in their concealment methods, much of their handiwork can be detected through routine, systematic examinations. Different types of containers are designed to accommodate different needs, but we'll concentrate on 20- and 40- foot dry and refrigerated containers.

The most common concealment methods used in dry van containers include false front walls, built-up floors, ceilings and container frames.

False walls have been detected where smuggler has manufactured false corner blocks.

Additionally, the false front wall may be of the same corrugated material as the legitimate wall. Other telltale signs of alterations include fresh paint, welding burns on either the interior or exterior of the container wall, variances in wall texture or lack of corrugation, and the odor of fresh pain, burnt wood, or body filler.

The floors in unaltered containers are usually flush with the front door frame. If the floorboards protrude above the level of the frame or appear to be new, not level, or slanting toward the front door of the container, then a possible false floor may exist.

The construction of the false ceiling can either be internal or external. An internally constructed false ceiling can be detected by reaching for the ceiling. When a false ceiling or floor exists, a change in height or in the ability to touch the roof should be noticed.

The most difficult method to detect is the use of container frames to conceal drugs. Without telltale signs, detection is possible only by drilling the frame and probing.
