The US Army includes a number of arms and services. The arms are those branches whose primary mission is combat and combat support. Infantry, Artillery (Field Artillery and Air Defense Artillery), Armor, Army Aviation and the Corps of Engineers are the main combat arms of the US Army. They are directly engaged in fighting. The services are those branches whose primary mission is to provide logistical and administrative support and whose personnel are not usually directly engaged in combat operations. They are the Ordnance Corps, the Finance Corps, the Army Medical Corps, the Transportation Corps and others. There are also combat support arms which provide operational assistance to the combat arms, including engagement in combat when necessary, but which have additional responsibilities in providing logistical and administrative support to the Army as a whole. These include the Signal Corps, Military Police Corps, Chemical Corps and Military Intelligence.

Infantry (Inf) is the arm of close combat. It is capable of seizing and holding terrain for extended periods. Its primary mission in attack is to close with the enemy and destroy or capture him; in defense--- to hold its position and repel the hostile assault. Infantry is capable of limited independent action by use of its own weapons but, as a rule, it is supported by other arms. It fights by combining fire, maneuver and shock effect. Infantry can move over any difficult ground by day and night and in any weather.

Artillery (Arty) is an arm of long-range combat. It is a supporting arm. Artillery is not capable of independent action. The primary mission of artillery is to support other arms by fire, give depth to combat by counter battery fires, attack hostile reserve, restrict movement and disrupt communication systems and other installations. Antiaircraft protection is another primary mission of artillery. Artillery fire is more powerful than infantry fire and it can influence the course and outcome of combat. Modern artillery is characterized by long range, destructive power, accuracy, mobility, fire flexibility and moral effect. The US Artillery is divided into FA (Field Artillery) and ADA (Air Defense Artillery).

Armor is the main striking force of the Army. Its main mission is to break through the enemy defenses and exploit the success of an attack. It can also carry out a number of independent missions. All the Armor units are characterized by high mobility, armor protection, great fire and striking power. That is why they are actively employed both in offensive and defensive operations. Armor units employ firepower and maneuver in the attack to dominate, neutralize or destroy enemy forces. In the defense armor units prevent, resist, repulse or destroy enemy attacks.

United States Army Aviation Branch is the newest combat arm of the Army. It was created in 1983. The missions of the Army Aviation are to find, fix, and destroy the enemy through fire and maneuver and to provide combat, combat service and combat service support in coordinated operations. The principal army aviation unit is the aviation brigade equipped with helicopters. The aviation brigades are well suited to conduct air assault, reconnaissance and logistical operations.

The Corps of Engineers is one of the most diversified branches of the Army. Its mission is to provide both military engineering and civil works, and all related planning, organization, training, operation, supply and maintenance.
