During the time of introduction of new firefighters, if any aspect of it is not clear, ask your chief specific questions concerning those areas in which information is not complete. This is the most effective way for an exchange of information to take place.

Like most other occupations, there are certain codes of ethics and standards of behavior in the fir service with which compliance is expected. Life in the fire department will bring the members close together during working hours. The firefighters eat, live, and share time together while on duty. As a result, these groups tend to establish their own values and norms and will make social and labor judgments based on the standards formed. The following suggestions may be important for a successful career in the fire service. They may also be helpful in providing some basic ideas for a smooth transition into the department.

· BE SINCERELY INTERESTED IN AND DEDICATED TO THE JOB

To properly perform in the fire service, firefighters must have a high degree of personal commitment. Selfish interests have no place. Only by a group effort can the protection of the public be accomplished. Cooperation is the key. This means that each person is willing to work in the position assigned and be dedicated to the performance of the duties in that position.

· BE LOYAL TO THE DEPARTMENT AND FELLOW FIREFIGHTERS

The firefighters are what makes a fire department. They should understand and be prepared to defend the policies and functions of the department. Firefighters are also representatives of the department, and their dress and actions should be a credit to the fire department.

· BE AGGRESSIVE IN THE PURSUIT OF ALL EDUCATION AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Firefighters are never fully trained. To believe so would be ludicrous. The achievement of each educational objective only reveals the path to the ever-increasing body of knowledge with which firefighters must be proficient if they are to excel in this challenging profession.

· BE THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO INSPIRES CONFIDENCE AND RESPECT

Firefighters should do their best at being honest, fair, and trustworthy when dealing with fellow firefighters and their chief. Dependability is a must in the fire service. Others rely on it.

· BE ABLE TO ACCEPT CRITICISM GRACIOUSLY AND ACCEPT PRAISE, HONORS, AND ADVANCEMENT MODESTLY

There is no such thing as the perfect firefighter. Everyone makes mistakes. Legitimate criticism of mistakes is not something to become angry at. In fact, it should be welcomed because improvement is very important in firefighter’s career. With improvement comes honors and advancement. These should be accepted with humility and in a manner that will not alienate others.
