Fire fighting is one of the world’s most honored but hazardous occupations. It is the duty of every fire department to save lives and reduce injuries and property losses. By becoming firefighters, people join an organization rich in heritage of dedication, unselfish sacrifice, and inspired human action.

The job of a firefighter is not easy or comfortable. It is one that requires a high sense of personal dedication, a genuine desire to help people, and a devotion to a profession that requires a high level of skill. It is also a profession that exposes an individual to a high level of personal danger.

Whenever there is a disaster, the fire department is one of the first called to the scene. Because it is a disaster, the conditions are not always favorable. It is hard, fast work that drains energy and tests endurance. But the situation will not always involve fire. There may be cave-ins, building collapses, auto accidents, aircraft crashes, tornadoes, hazardous materials incidents, civil disturbances, rescue operations, explosions, water incidents, and medical emergencies. The emergency list is unlimited.

When people feel they have an emergency, they think of the fire department first. Firefighters are involved with all types of people, appreciated by some and scorned by others. Since firefighters are public servants, they are expected to calmly evaluate the problem and bring it to a successful conclusion. As a result of this position, firefighters will come to know sincere thanks, human kindness, misunderstanding, sadness, helplessness, and disappointment. Firefighters will see and know unrestricted emotion, destruction, foolishness, pain, and death. From the first time an emergency situation is encountered until the last day of service, firefighters are expected by the public to perform heroically. However, firefighters are not super heroes. Like other people, they have their limits. Everything cannot be done at once. This fact must be accepted. Any emergency situation requires knowledge, ability, and skill to bring it to a safe conclusion.

It is an old adage that people learn from their mistakes. In the fire service, waiting to learn from mistakes can be fatal. Indeed, there is no need to learn from mistakes. Training is the key. The training firefighters receive, if proper, will let them become proficient in the occupation. The education and training of firefighters cover such a broad spectrum of subjects and are so diversified that it is impossible to become completely trained.

Exercise 4. Translate into English:

1. Пожаротушение – одна из наиболее опасных профессий в мире.

2. Спасать жизни и имущество людей – это долг пожарных.

3. Работа пожарного требует искреннего желания помогать людям.

4. Когда бы ни случилась беда, пожарная охрана одной из первых вызывается к месту происшествия.

5. Список ЧС, на которые выезжает пожарная охрана, безграничен.
