Exercise 1. Learn the words and word combinations:

 

1. to finish school with honours to leave (left) school with honours ['li:v ('left) 'sku:l wið ‘onəz] окончить школу с отличием

Exercise 3. Read and translate the following sentences into Russian

5. I'm going to be an economist.

6. He took a course in management at university.

7. My father is a good specialist in mining.

8. I'm by profession a lawyer.

12. I did some research on the economic situation in the Rostov region.

13. My friend won a scholarship to this school.

I. Revise the usage and meanings of the verb to have.

II. Translate the following sentences into Russian. Pay attention to different meanings of the verb have.

 

1. She's got a cassette-recorder.

2. We had fun at the party.

3. Have you got any money on you? - Yes, I've got some.

4. Do you have any relatives in the city? Yes, I do. My aunt and uncle live in the suburb.

5. My mother has to get up early in the morning.

6. How long have you known Jane? I've known her for three years.

7. Have a look at this house. It's very beautiful.

8. My father has been working for the company since 1995.

9. I'm hungry. I'd like to have a snack.

10. Did you have a good flight?

11. Have you had breakfast? - Not yet.

12. We had a very good time in the country.

13. He's got little time.

14. My mother has got to work hard.

15. She has (got) a toothache.

16. Peter is on duty today. He has to come earlier.

 

Exercise 5. Say which things you have got in your room. Use the words from the list given below. You may also use other nouns.

 

E.g. I've got a computer in my room.

A television, a stereo, a computer, a calculator, a cassette-recorder, a walkman, cassettes, CDs (compact discs); a camera, films; a bookcase, a bookshelf, a sofa, a wardrobe, chairs, armchairs.

 

Exercise 6. Ask other students about the things they have got with them; the things they have got at home; the relatives they have got in the town.

Exercise 7. Say what you have (got) to do and what you don't have (haven't got) to do. You may either use the word combinations from the list given below or give your own variants.

 

E.g. I have (got) to get up early on weekdays.

I don't have (haven't got) to get up early on Saturday and Sunday.

To combine work and study; to cook meals; to go to the library every day; to ask for your friends' lecture notes (конспекты); to work hard; to work independently; to stay at home in the evening.

 

Exercise 8. Read and translate the following texts.
