Adjective of nationality

1. Adjectives of nationalities have 5 different types of endings:

2. Before nationalities, when referring to individual, the article is sometimes omitted.

e.g. She’s British, but her husband is Greek.

3. When the adjective is used to create a category, “the” is necessary.

e.g. The Germans want as many tourists as possible.

The Chineese are difficult to understand.

4. When referring to an ability to speak a language, the article is omitted.

e.g. He can speak French, German and Spanish.

Note: In many cases the nationality is the same word as the language (the French – French), but sometimes they are different (the British – English).
