I. State the forms of the Infinitive in the following sentences. Translate them into Russian

На русский язык этот оборот переводится полным придаточным предложением, вводимым союзами что, чтобы, причем существительное (или местоимение) этого оборота переводится существительным (или местоимением) в функции подлежащего придаточного предложения, а инфинитив – глаголом-сказуемым в личной форме.

He waited for her to speak but Он ждал, чтобы она заговорила,

she didn’t. но она молчала.

She paused for him to continue. Она замолчала, чтобы он

продолжил.

He had said enough for me to get Он сказал достаточно, чтобы

alarmed. я встревожилась.

1. I can’t hear a word, though he seems to be speaking.

2. I’m happy not to have failed you.

3. One of our students was suddenly taken ill and had to be operated on immediately. He had to miss quite a number of lessons.

4. He was very sorry to have missed so many lessons just before the exam.

5. To have been interrogated in such a way was a real shock to him.

 

 

II. Translate the following sentences into Russian and state the functions of the Infinitive.

1. It was useless to discuss the question.

2. To detect the criminal is very often not an easy task.

3. The main duty of militia officers is to fight crime.

4. The train was to leave at midnight.

5. It was pleasant to be driving a car again.

6. At their college the students are taught to find evidence.

7. Our militia was created by the working people to protect their rights.

8. Everything was done to save him.

9. To live in London in November is to know what fog means.

10. The evidence to be presented for court may be found in the crime scene.

 

III. Translate into Russian, paying attention to the Active and Passive Infinitive.

1. Imports of raw materials into Great Britain have to be paid for by exports of manufactured goods.

2. Individuals can sue or be sued in either system, depending mostly on what their case is about.

3. “High Court Judges” deal with the most serious crimes, such as those for which the criminal might be sent to prison for more than a year.

4. In order to be enforced an Act of Parliament must be published in Statute form.

5. A money Bill must be passed by the Lords without amendment.

6. The vast majority of cases are to be resolved in the state courts.

7. Each department needs to be headed by two people.

8. Ought we to abolish the death penalty?

9. The person sentenced to ten years of imprisonment was satisfied to have been visited by a priest.

 

IV. Translate into Russian, paying attention to the Indefinite, Continuous and Perfect forms of the Infinitive.

1. The president of the US has the right to reject a bill.

2. The jury is ready to be helping the judge.

3. The secretary was sorry to have kept us waiting.

4. The defendant is satisfied to have been hearing the witnesses’ evidence during the trial.

5. They supposed that law to have been abolished in that country.

6. That time the bill was supposed to be rejected by Parliament.

 

V. Translate the following sentences into Russian. Mind the use of the Infinitive as an attribute.

1. There is nothing to be done about it.

2. I must find somebody for you to play tennis with.

3. Let’s find something to sit on.

4. Isn’t there anything more interesting to look at?

5. I have no money to speak of.

6. There was still a mile to walk.

7. He is the one to speak to, not me.

8. Who was the last to arrive?

9. The meeting to be held tomorrow is of great importance.

10. The driver asked me the address to drive to.

11. The person to be interviewed must be prepared to give evidence.

12. The facts about the crime to be obtained by the investigator can be given by the witnesses.
