2. Who can help you in your job search?

3. What are the main steps in obtaining a job?

4. What may help you identify your marketable skills?

5. What is your first priority in a job hunt campaign?

Ex 2. Look up these word combinations in the dictionary and use them in your sentences: newspaper ads, place newspaper ads, respond to ads in professional journals, mail blind letters and resumes, read special business employment publications, contact a job clearing house.

Ex 3. Read the text, find key words

One of the most successful techniques is networking, which involves contacting people you know, as well as people they know, to gather information and leads for the job. Employers ask their friends who ask their friends, and eventually a suitable candidate is found. This candidate is interviewed first, given preferential treatment and usually hired.

A networking jobseeker cultivates the people already successful in the field and asks for mentorship and advice. Begin with your own contact network. Don’t be afraid to ask people in your field for an inside view and practical advice. Establish contacts. Networking can be affective though it does require some efforts. Employers interested in more advanced candidates sometimes send their reqs to select recruiters. Recruiting agencies are third party recruiters hired by an employer to help fill a position. They get requirements from employers, then find candidates to match these requirements though advertising in newspapers, on Usernet, and within their internal data bases of resumes.

Job fAIRS ( career fairs ) are gathering where many candidates meet with recruiters from one or more organizations for brief interviews. Most job fairs involve face-to-face contact, but Internet job fairs are becoming more common.

Don’t forget to bring along many copies of your resume, a list of recommendation letters from your references, your business cards.

Whatever strategy you follow during your job campaign, remember two things.

First, employers almost always have a shortage of good, qualified employees.

Second, there’s an answer to every career problem if you solve your problem not by focusing on your own needs and frustrations, but on the ways to help others and how others will benefit from you.

Ex 4. Look through the text again and answer the questions:

1. What are the options to conduct job search? 2. What is networking? 3. Who do recruiters represent? 4. Where do employers send their reqs to? 5. What is job fair?

Ex 5. Listen to a dialogue and read it on your own training intonation and pronunciation. P36

Ron: Hi Chris. This is Ron Black calling from New York.

Chris: Hi Ron. I’m glad you called. How are you?

Ron: Fine thanks. Bit as friend to friend, I decided to call you to let you know that my work with John & Johnson is over. And I need to find another position.

Chris: Oh, that’s really bad news. I’m sorry to hear that you’re out of work now. But how come you’re on the market again? Did you not get along with your boss?

Ron: Well, don’t misunderstand me. There are no hard feeling between the company and me. I’m leaving on excellent terms with all of them. This parting of the ways is by mutual consent.

Chris: That’s great. But what’s the reason then?

Ron: Well, you see, it’s due to circumstances beyond my control: some major organizational changes at John & Johnson have led to some considerable doubling up in staffing, 20 managers were laid off, and I lost my job at the end of December.

Chris: I see hoe you feel, Ron. Is there anything I can do for you?

Ron: Yes, I think so. My network of contacts is limited, so if you know or ever hear of anything for someone with my background and abilities, please let me know. I’ll mail resumes to you tomorrow.
