Sea ports (I)

Sea transport plays an important role in the Russian Far East economy and in the national economy as a whole. Seaports handle the export flows of Russian commodities to international markets and imports from the Asian Pacific nations to Russia. Besides, sea transport is practically the only means of delivering cargoes to some RFE regions (Magadanskaya Oblast, Kamchatka, Sakhalin, northern areas of Khabarovsky Krai).

There are 32 seaports, of which 22 are commercial ports and 10 are fishing ports, and about 300 harbors with available wharves and anchorage, scattered along the RFE coast. In all, there are about 270 for-profit businesses performing port functions in the region.

The most important ports of year-round navigation are (from south to north): Zarubino, Posyet, Vladivostok, Nakhodka, Vostochny, Vanino, Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski, and Korsakov and Kholmsk on Sakhalin.

The bulk of port facilities is concentrated in Primorye, Khabarovsky Krai and on Sakhalin. The major ports, situated here, are capable of handling up to 100 million tons of cargo annually.

The export-bound flows from the Russian Far East consist of deliveries to the Asian Pacific countries of timber, fish and seafood, metal, coal, and ore. Imported cargoes are chiefly food products.

There are two ferry service s in the region, Vanino - Kholmsk opened in 1973 and Korsakov - Hokkaido opened in 1995.

The region’s largest ports, Vladivostok, Nakhodka, Vostochny, Vanino, are connected with the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Baikal-Amur Railway, which makes them key points in attracting transit cargo flows via Russia to East and Central Europe nations.
