There are about 200 shipping companies registered in the Russian Far East, owning a total of slightly more than 1,000 ships for ocean, coastal and in-harbor shipping. The majority of them are small businesses owning one or two ships or chartering ships. The region’s largest shippers FESCO, PRIMSCO, Vostoktransflot, Sakhalin Shipping Co., Kamchatka Shipping Co., Arctic Shipping Co., are based in sea ports Vladivostok, Nakhodka, Kholmsk, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski, Tiksi. The fleet is composed of various ships - container carriers, bulkers, roll-on/roll-off ship s, timber carriers, woodchip carriers, rail and automobile ferries, tankers (including ice-class ships), refrigerator ships, icebreakers, passenger liners and others. Two shipping companies are specialized. PRIMSCO operates Russia’s largest tanker flotilla (44 ships total 635,000 dwt) and carries oil, oil products, liquid food products and chemicals. Vostoktransflot is specialized in the carriage of refrigerated cargoes.

At the present time, RFE cargo ships call 150 ports in more than 60 countries and support Russia’s foreign trade with Asian Pacific and Southeast Asian nations. The most important international lines connect the region with Japan, China, Republic of Korea, United States, Australia, New Zealand. PRIMSCO successfully works on international trade-cross routes in Southeast Asia, India, China, Europe, Africa, Australia and South America. FESCO ships serve container lines “Australia - USA” with calls to the largest Australian (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide) and U.S. (Seattle, Portland, Oakland, Long Beach) ports. The line “KSDS” (Korea - Singapore - Dalian - Singapore) was organized in conjunction with the South Korean company “Hyundai”. The new high-speed container carrier “Kapitan Afanasiev” began serving the line “Pusan - Inchon - Vostochny - Vladivostok” in April 1998. The Sakhalin Shipping Company operates on the lines Singapore - Calcutta, Vanino - Shanghai - Hongkong - Vanino, Kholmsk - Japanese ports”.
