Unit 2

1. What do you know about the trends of Zarubino port development?

2. What are the reasons for renewing and building ports on Sakhalin?

3. What do you know about the international offshore oil projects on Sakhalin?

Sea ports (II)

A transport zone for serving transit cargoes coming from the northern provinces of China and Mongolia to Asian Pacific regions and vice versa is being currently formed in south of Primorsky Krai. Along with the well-equipped ports of Nakhodka and Vladivostok, capable of handling practically all cargoes, this zone will also include the sea port Zarubino elevated to an international status a few years ago. Zarubino is situated in 70 km from the Chinese border and at a very short distance from North Korea. It usually handles metal products, timber, fish. In anticipation of transit cargoes from China and Mongolia, the port built a complex for reloading wood chips and starting constructing grain and container terminals. By the year 2002, Zarubino plans to raise turnover up to 1 million tons, of which 250,000 tons will be chips, 250,000 tons will be grain and 150,000 tons will be containerized cargoes. The port’s railway and automobile road infrastructure is being actively reconstructed for effective servicing of transit cargo flows.

The port infrastructure on Sakhalin will also be further developed. Besides renewal of the island’s main ports, Kholmsk and Korsakov, there are plans to create two new ports. One of them, situated in Shakhtersk, on the west coast, will be a base port for export of coal from Sakhalin’s largest brown coal field Solntsevskoye found in 35 km from Shakhtersk, and the other, situated in Nabil Bay, on the east coast, will be specialized in loading petroleum extracted from offshore oilfields to foreign consumers. (At the present time, oil is loaded at offshore moorings.)

The project of building a marine oil terminal in De-Kastri (Chikhacheva Bay, Khabarovsky Krai). The oil and gas pipeline Okha - Komsomolsk-na-Amure passes close to this area, and in the future, when the exploitation ofSakhalin’s western oilfields begins, the oil loading facility in De-Kastri may become the most optimal point for further transportation of Sakhalin oil to domestic and external markets.
