An Environment Agency in any developed country takes a respon­sibility lor the water quality forbidding uncontrolled discharges; water pollution quality standard monitoring is regularly carried out.

Physical parameters include colour, odour, temperature, and tur­bidity. Insoluble contents such as solids, oil and grease also fall into this category.

Chemical parameters associated with organic contents include bi­ochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC) and total oxygen demand (TOD).

There is an international classification of water purity:

• Good quality, Class la means highest quality water.

• Good quality, Class lb stands for lower quality water of the same use,
