«I (name), haven been appointed a (rank), United States (service) do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter. The servicemen of the US Army have various insignia, such as grade insignia, arm or service insignia, and others. They wear them on shoulder loops, headgear, sleeves, collars, and lapels of their uniform.

Privates have no grade insignia.

Noncommissioned Officers and privates first class wear their grade insignia (stripes) on both sleeves of their uniform.

Warrant Officers and Commissioned Officers wear their grade insignia on shoulder loops, ride side of the collar, on the front of the service cap and helmet and on the left side of the garrison cap.

Grade insignia for Warrant Officers are brown shoulder loops with gold and silver bars on them.

Grade insignia for company officers are bars: one gold bar for a second lieutenant, one silver bar for a first lieutenant, and two silver bars for a captain.

Grade insignia for field officers are oak leaves and a spread eagle. One gold oak leaf is for a major, one silver oak leaf for a lieutenant colonel, and one silver spread eagle for a colonel.

Silver stars are grade insignia for general officers. One star is for a brigadier general, two stars for a major general, three stars for a lieutenant general, four stars for a general, and five stars for a General of the Army.

Noncommissioned Officers, specialists, soldiers wear their arm or service insignia only on the left side of the collar of their overcoat, service coat, and jacket.

Warrant Officers and Commissioned Officers wear arm or service insignia on both coat lapels and on the left side of the collar of the service shirt.
