Underground mining

Students study progressive organization and technology of underground mining operations, advanced ways of mining manufacturing mechanization operation and automation tools, underground mines' parameters design engineering, technological modeling and optimization, also engineering foundations of labour protection and industrial injuries prevention.

Students are to become: chief power engineering specialists, electric drives', control and automation systems' adjusters. Students study the following disciplines: power transforming equipment, microprocessor-based devices, electrical engineering theory, electric machines, electric and electronic devices, automatized electric driver, automated management theory, automation systems elements, miring manufacturing enginery, mining manufacturing settings' aid machines' automation, electric devices assembling, setting up and operation, electrical equipment reliability and diagnostics, power audit and power supply.

Students - land-surveyors and cartographers, - study modern ways of satellite measurements of different regions of the surface coordinates and altitudes, and space methods of modern electric map production, including new types of ecological maps. Even during the fist year of studying they master and successfully use modern geoinformation technologies in studies and practice.

Students study modern engineering and technology of hard minerals deposit development, master new mining information technologies, get right for mining and blasting responsible leadership. After graduating from the University students have an opportunity to work for mineral resource enterprises, and can also improve their skills in post-graduate study, preparation and defense of candidate and doctor theses.

Students are aware of modern risks on industrial enterprises, of people's reaction on negative man-caused factors of the habitat, systems and methods of people's defense, technological processes safety control.

Mining Engineering Department, founded in 1930, is one of the basic departments of the Irkutsk State Technical University. It provides multilevel preparation system (bachelor, engineer, master, candidate of engineering sciences, doctor of engineering sciences).

Students of the Department have a base for geodesic practice situated in the beautiful taiga zone of Pribaikaile (Popovo village), where they get professional knowledge and skills, and where the sun and mountain air help to strengthen their fitness.

Chairs and study complexes of the Department have modern equipment including up-to-date computer engineering supplies. Reading halls and rich library funds provide students with all necessary information.

For 70 years the Mining Engineering Department has prepared more than 11 thousand specialists (for foreign countries as well). They make up the elite of administrative workers of mineral resource enterprises.

More than 75% of the staff of the Department has Candidate of Science and Doctor of Science Degrees; twelve lecturers are Corresponding Members and academicians of different Academies of Sciences of the Russian Federation.
